Filling the gap in children’s hospice care, World Hospice Day|This second-level hospital in Shanghai has newly opened the “Zhuguang Xiaozhu”
The last ward in the hospice care ward on the sixth floor of Liqun Hospital in Putuo District is a little different: the decoration here is full of childishness, and the warm and warm colors are quiet and comfortable. At the age of 10, Xiao Ke suffered from a brain tumor and his life was uncertain. He was about to reach the end of his life at such a young age. In his last days, Xiao Ke and his parents stayed together in this ward, showing full humanistic care while receiving hospice care.
Today is the 19th World Hospice Day. This year’s theme is “Caring Community, Sharing Peace”, which means integrating the concept of hospice into every community. The children's hospice care room of Liqun Hospital was officially launched on the 12th. The reporter learned that this is also the first children's hospice care unit opened in a secondary general hospital in Shanghai.
Life care is care for all ages, and care for children in the terminal stages of the disease cannot be ignored. The relevant person in charge of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission revealed that with people’s awareness and acceptance of the concept of hospice care, the demand for people of all ages has gradually increased. However, at present, children’s hospice care is still in its infancy, and the service supply is far from sufficient and needs to be improved urgently.
The children's care room in Liqun Hospital has a nice name - "Chasing Light House". If it weren't for the "Hospice Care" sign hanging outside the ward, it would be difficult for visitors to associate "Chasing Light House" with farewell. Xiao Ke is the first patient admitted to "Zhuguang Xiaozhu".
Palliative care never forgets the children in need. Since last year, the Putuo District Health Commission has promoted "specialized palliative care" to expand the service population. With the support of the Shanghai Children's Hospital Specialist Medical Alliance, it has established an "1112X" children's hospice care service system. This is how "Zhuguang Xiaozhu" came into being.
Wu Yumiao, Secretary of the Party Branch of Liqun Hospital, said that the children's care room is a people-benefiting measure to promote work development during the theme education period of Putuo District's health system. The original intention of the construction is to allow family members to spend more time with their children in the last moments and stay longer. Some memories, less regrets. The ward is named "Zhuguang Xiaozhu", which means that it is born towards the sun and follows the light, so that every child staying here can bathe in the warm sunshine.
The "Zhuguang Xiaozhu" of more than 20 square meters has soft light and elegant layout. There are windows on the south and west sides, and you can see the rooftop garden at a glance. The room is designed with a forest theme and looks like a magical tree house. It has a sofa, a coffee table and a separate bathroom. Colorful cartoon pictures are hung on the walls.
Everything is organized around the children. In addition to a children's hospital bed, the room also has a double foldable sofa bed, so that parents can always stay with their children. The natural soft-light screen above the bed can play cartoon scenery videos and music with themes of the four seasons throughout the year to soothe the tension of children and parents. It is reported that the construction of this children's hospice ward has received strong support from the "Come on Baby" program of the Shanghai Juequn Cultural and Educational Foundation.
Pediatric hospice care mainly treats children with end-stage diseases such as malignant tumors. Li Mengfan, director of Liqun Hospital, said: The hospital has established a multidisciplinary collaboration team that combines pediatrics, palliative care, critical care medicine, pharmacy, nutrition, medical social workers, volunteers and other teams to provide palliative care and grief counseling. and other services to help children and families improve their quality of life.
In "Zhuguang Xiaozhu", medical talks, social work intervention, parent-child farewell, etc. can also be carried out. The goal is to provide children with a friendlier, warmer and companionable caring space.
The reporter learned that Putuo District was listed as one of the first batch of palliative care pilot areas in the country in 2017. The District Health Commission invested special funds and established a district palliative care center in Liqun Hospital, innovatively establishing a "112" Hospice care service system.
"In the future, we will further explore the norms and standards for children's hospice care based on the experience of the first batch of hospice care pilots, and unite social forces to integrate children's care and hospice care." Deng Hai, Secretary of the Putuo District Health Work Party Committee Ju said.
On that day, the "Yuexin Alliance-Putuo District Hospice Psychological Support Project" was launched simultaneously. This project is jointly initiated by Liqun Hospital and Putuo District Mental Health Center. It will target children with terminal cancer and their families, as well as palliative care medical staff, through popular psychological knowledge lectures, psychological counseling activities, group activities, family therapy, etc. Provide physical and psychological support to provide more guarantee for the development of children’s hospice care.
The relevant person in charge of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission said that as the first and only provincial-level region in the country to carry out overall hospice care pilots, the advancement of Shanghai’s hospice care work demonstrates the warmth of the city and the level of urban civilization development. After years of practice, Shanghai’s hospice care has gradually shifted from quantitative change to qualitative change, and a universal, basic and comprehensive hospice care system has been basically formed. Community health service centers across the city provide hospice services, providing community residents with institutional or home hospice services to relieve pain, bring care and dignity to patients and their families in the terminal stages of the disease.
In the next step, Shanghai will further advance in terms of humanization, specialization, and systematization; based on the current situation, it will cooperate deeply with the Yangtze River Delta region, share resources, and work together to promote the high-quality development of palliative care.
It is also reported that the "World Hospice Day Theme Event and the Yangtze River Delta Hospice Academic Conference" was also held today. Experts and scholars in the field of hospice from all over the country will share their views. The "Shanghai Hospice Development Blue Book" will be released at the meeting. , and awarded the "Excellent Cases of Hospice Care Services in Shanghai", and announced the list of projects for the "2023 Shanghai Hospice Care Scientific Research Capacity Improvement Project".
To help spread the concept of hospice care, tonight the twin towers of the iconic building "Global Harbor" in Putuo District will be lit up to pay tribute to World Hospice Day and hospice practitioners, adding brightness to the event.
