Wang Yi Meets with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar
On July 4, 2024 local time, Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Astana.
Wang Yi said that the current century-old changes are accelerating. As two ancient civilizations, major developing countries and representatives of emerging economies, China and India are both at a critical juncture of national rejuvenation. Adhering to good-neighborly friendship and achieving common development is in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples and in line with the correct historical logic. The two sides should view bilateral relations from a strategic height, strengthen communication, properly handle differences, and ensure that China-India relations develop along a healthy and stable track. We are willing to follow the series of important consensuses reached by the leaders of the two countries, respect each other, understand each other, trust each other, take care of each other, and achieve each other, and explore the right way for the two major neighbors to get along. We must adhere to positive thinking, on the one hand properly handle and control the situation in the border area, on the other hand actively resume normal exchanges, promote each other, and move towards each other.
Wang Yi stressed that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. At that time, Chinese leaders joined hands with Indian and Myanmar leaders to jointly advocate the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, contributing Eastern wisdom and setting a correct benchmark for building a post-war international order and handling relations between countries. Today, 70 years later, both sides have the responsibility and obligation to inherit and carry forward the spirit of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and inject new contemporary connotations into them. China and India, both countries in the "Global South", should work together to oppose unilateral bullying, resist camp confrontation, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, and make due contributions to regional and world peace, stability and development.
Jaishankar said that the current geopolitical situation is very complex and the two major neighbors, India and China, face common challenges. India and China have extensive common interests. Developing a stable and predictable India-China relationship is in the interests of both sides and will benefit the region and the world. India hopes to work with China to constructively resolve specific differences and open a new page in India-China relations as soon as possible, guided by the grand vision reached by the leaders of the two countries. China is about to take over the rotating presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. India supports China in fulfilling its duties and is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation in multilateral mechanisms. India will adhere to an independent foreign policy, adhere to the concept of multilateralism, promote multipolarization, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries.
The two sides agreed to work towards stability in the border area and hold a new round of consultations on the border issue as soon as possible.
