The Director General of the World Trade Organization harshly criticized wealthy Western countries
According to Bloomberg News on September 5th, the Director General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo Ivira, has harshly criticized Western governments for pursuing protectionist policies and shifting towards a power based global trading system.
"Some developed countries have recently taken unilateral trade protectionism measures and have generally remained silent about the multilateral trading system and the World Trade Organization. Developing countries consider these actions selfish and hypocritical," Okonjo Ivera said at a meeting held in Berlin on Monday
She said, "Developing countries believe that rich countries benefit greatly from the multilateral trading system and their economies develop as a result. However, now rich countries no longer hope for fair competition, but are more willing to shift towards a system based on power rather than rules."
The report stated that although Okonjo Ivera did not name any country, the US government, led by President Biden and former President Trump, had called for increased domestic production in key industries and greater attention to economic security - previously, the US had been pursuing policies to promote globalization for more than 25 years.
