Recently, wildlife protection monitoring personnel from the Bailongjiang Forestry Protection Center in Gansu Province found that the infrared camera placed at the Diebu Management Center captured photos and videos of a new species while sorting out the returned infrared camera data. The species images captured by infrared cameras are particularly clear, with a robust body, unique head, ears, and body trunk, as well as prominent features such as black tail tips.
After identification by multiple experts, this species is classified as a national first-class key protected wild animal, the Golden Cat. This is another new record in the Bailongjiang Forest Area, following the snow leopard, desert cat, and water deer.
The golden cat is a carnivorous mammal belonging to the feline family and the golden cat genus. It inhabits various forests in mountainous areas, from moist evergreen forests to arid coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests or coniferous forests at an altitude of about 3000 meters, and can be seen as a top carnivorous animal in mountain forest ecosystems. In 2022, there will be exact images proving the distribution of golden cats in China, including southeast Xizang, western Sichuan, western and southern Yunnan, southern Gansu and southern Shaanxi.
