Latest response! It’s about every Tesla
There is a latest response to the single-pedal mode of every Tesla in the Chinese market.
On June 3, Tesla responded to recent rumors in the market that Tesla's single-pedal mode may be banned, saying that this standard has not yet been officially released and implemented and will not affect existing products and functions.
Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology publicly solicited opinions on a mandatory national standard "Technical Requirements and Experimental Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems", which involves changes in the application conditions of the energy recovery braking function of new energy vehicles. In this regard, some voices in the market believe that Tesla's single-pedal mode may be banned.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has solicited opinions on the single-pedal model
Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a document on its website to solicit public opinions on five mandatory national standards including the "Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems".
"Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems" shows that compared with GB21670-2008 "Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems", the latest version of the document adds "Type A and both Type A and B For vehicles with an electric regenerative braking system, the braking effect achieved by releasing the accelerator pedal cannot decelerate the vehicle to a stop."
According to the draft for comments, the "Type A electric regenerative braking system" does not belong to the electric regenerative braking system of the service braking system, and the "Type B electric regenerative braking system" belongs to the electric regenerative braking of the service braking system. system.
At the same time as the draft for comments was released, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also released revision instructions simultaneously. Regarding the above clauses, the revision notes mentioned, “With the gradual and widespread application of A-type electric regenerative braking system technology in recent years, because drivers control the accelerator pedal to achieve braking and parking for a long time, it may lead to the development of corresponding driving habits. , misapplication occurs during emergency braking conditions.”
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology emphasized: “In order to clarify the positioning of Type A electric regeneration as an auxiliary braking, this requirement is proposed based on sufficient industry research and discussion, aiming to guide drivers to develop good driving habits and ensure Driving safety.”
Public information shows that the braking energy recovery of the accelerator pedal is generally called "single pedal mode" and is mainly used in new energy electric vehicles to increase cruising range. In this mode, when the driver completely releases the accelerator pedal, the drive motor recovers kinetic energy with greater power, and the vehicle decelerates faster, which can partially replace the braking function. Therefore, in most road conditions, the driver can use the accelerator pedal to recover kinetic energy. Deep and shallow control of vehicle acceleration and deceleration.
At present, Tesla is the most well-known car company with the single-pedal mode and the most used vehicles. This technology also has high requirements for vehicle tuning. Currently, a few models such as Xiaomi and Jiyue also use this mode. The Tesla Model Y owner's manual shows that as long as the vehicle is driving and the driver releases the accelerator pedal, energy recovery braking will reduce the vehicle speed and transfer the remaining power back to the battery.
Tesla recalled millions of cars over single-pedal mode
In May 2023, Tesla China announced that it would recall some cars through OTA and add a reminder function for deep depression of the accelerator pedal. Tesla has filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation. Starting from May 29, 2023, it will recall some imported Model S, Model X, and Model 3 with production dates between January 12, 2019 and April 24, 2023. and domestic Model 3 and Model Y cars, a total of 1,104,622 Tesla cars.
Regarding Tesla’s recall, industry insiders pointed out that Tesla’s sales from 2019 to the first quarter of 2023 showed that sales in 2019 exceeded 40,000 vehicles, sales in 2020 exceeded 147,900, and sales in 2021 exceeded 40,000. million vehicles, with sales exceeding 439,700 vehicles in 2022, and cumulative sales in the first quarter of 2023 exceeding 137,400 vehicles. Preliminary statistics show that from 2019 to the first quarter of 2023, Tesla’s cumulative sales in China were around 1.17 million vehicles. This Tesla recall is close to all its cumulative sales in the Chinese market during the same period, which shows the scale of this recall and the wide scope of its impact.
It is worth noting that, in the past, there have been many cases of car owners accusing Tesla of traffic accidents caused by suspected "sudden acceleration" and "brake failure", both in domestic and overseas markets. This has also frequently brought Tesla to the forefront of public opinion. at the forefront of the epidemic and triggered related consumer rights protection incidents.
Regarding why Tesla always reports "brake failure" news, many people in the industry have previously pointed the finger at Tesla's unique forced single-pedal mode, and asked whether "the single-pedal mode should be blamed for the vehicle's loss of control." The topic has also aroused widespread discussion.
The energy recovery concept of electric vehicles has given rise to the single-pedal mode of driving using one pedal. In single-pedal mode, the vehicle still retains two pedals, accelerating and braking, but the driver only needs to control the accelerator pedal to complete operations such as starting, accelerating, decelerating, coasting and even braking.
"This involves two core issues: one is safety, and the other is consumers' right to choose." Zhang Kangkang, a senior analyst at Tsingyan Huake Research Institute, told reporters that from a safety perspective, a single pedal is not necessarily unsafe. Whether it is safe or not depends on the person and the scene. In fact, the two major advantages of the single pedal mode are safety and energy saving.
Zhang Kangkang further pointed out, "The key point is that changing driving habits is not as easy as we think. Because there are two types of changes in habits: habitual reactions in familiar scenes and intuitive reactions in emergency scenes."
Under emergency conditions, the uncertainty of subconscious operations refers to whether the driver will increase the possibility of making mistakes in extreme emergency situations. For example, will the driver follow this subconscious operation: Lifting the foot can force the brake → the current foot position can control the braking → in an emergency, the driver should step deeply immediately instead of moving the foot to waste time.
In Zhang Kangkang’s view, perhaps only 1% of single-pedal drivers make mistakes in 1% of scenarios, “but this is enough to make the single-pedal issue a hot topic.”
