Biden's son may face two court trials next month
Hunter Biden, the second son of U.S. President Joseph Biden, may appear in court next month on criminal charges in federal courts in Delaware and California.
Hunter was charged with three federal felonies for concealing a history of substance abuse when purchasing a gun in October 2018 and then possessing the gun for 11 days.
According to the Associated Press, Hunter’s defense lawyer applied to Delaware Federal District Judge Mary Ellen Noreka on the 14th to postpone Hunter’s criminal prosecution case for illegal gun possession, which was originally scheduled to begin on June 3 to September The trial will be held on June 1, on the grounds that more time is needed to find witnesses and review the evidence submitted by the prosecution.
However, Judge Noreka believed that these tasks could be completed before June 3 and therefore dismissed the defense application.
Later on the 14th, Hunter's appeal in another case was not supported. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit determined that the criminal tax evasion case he faced in California could continue to advance. Hunter is charged with three federal felonies and six misdemeanors in this case for owing at least $1.4 million in back taxes from 2016 to 2019. The case is expected to be heard on June 20. Reuters previously reported that Hunter faced a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison if convicted.
Both cases involving Hunter were led by Justice Department special prosecutor David Weiss. Weiss was ordered to investigate Hunter's business dealings for many years. The two parties originally reached a plea agreement last year, but the agreement was not approved by Judge Noreka. Weiss subsequently prosecuted Hunter.
Hunter's previous attempts to delay the trial of the two criminal lawsuits were not supported by the presiding courts of the two states and the higher Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.
Hunter is the first child of a sitting U.S. president to be indicted.
