Two tasks, Biden's Asia tour
According to the Global Times, the two-day G20 summit will open in New Delhi, India on the 9th. US President Biden has departed for New Delhi on the evening of the 7th local time and is scheduled to meet with Indian Prime Minister Modi on the evening of the 8th.
According to reports, Biden intends to demonstrate to the world through the G20 summit and his visit to Vietnam that the United States is a trustworthy "substitute for China", and that the United States and its allies are better economic and security partners than China.
Biden's trip to Asia has two main focuses, one is to woo developing countries to confront China, and the other is to build momentum for elections.
At the end of August, the White House requested Congress to provide $3.3 billion in additional funds for the World Bank to "significantly expand development and infrastructure financing" and provide "a credible alternative" to other countries to replace so-called "mandatory and unsustainable loans and infrastructure projects" from China.
According to reports, the primary goal of the United States at this G20 summit is to promote global financial institution reform. By hyping the so-called "debt trap" made by China again, the United States hopes to convince developing countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia that the United States can provide another option beyond the "the Belt and Road".
US Treasury Secretary Yellen has publicly declared that the World Bank and IMF reflect American values and are "forces with which the United States can ally" to counter China's growing influence on developing countries.
At a press conference on the 5th, White House National Security Advisor Sullivan insisted that the plan to increase the World Bank's treasury was not aimed at China. However, he paradoxically said that it was "crucial" for countries to find alternatives to the "the Belt and Road".
During the meeting, Biden and leaders of India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates also hoped to announce a "major joint infrastructure project agreement", which plans to connect the Persian Gulf and Arab countries through a railway system and India through ports and waterways in the Middle East.
The US media hype claims that this move is one of the key measures that the US government hopes to take in the Middle East, as China's influence is increasing. A former senior Israeli official who directly participated in early discussions revealed, "No one said it out loud, but this project has been related to China since the first day.".
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, in response to questions about infrastructure initiatives, stated that China believes that there is broad cooperation space in the global infrastructure field, and there is no issue of mutual confrontation or substitution among various related initiatives. The world needs to build bridges, not dismantle them; It is interconnectivity, not decoupling and building walls; It is a win-win situation, not a closed exclusivity. China welcomes all initiatives that contribute to the convergence of forces and the promotion of global infrastructure construction. Any plan to promote geopolitics under the banner of infrastructure construction is unpopular and will not succeed.
In addition, the G20 summit is also an opportunity to build momentum for Biden, whose approval ratings are struggling.
The latest poll in the United States shows that up to 77% of the population believe that 81 year old Biden is not suitable for running for president again, and among Democratic Party supporters, 69% also believe that Biden is not suitable for running for president again.
Vice President Harris stated in an interview on the 6th that if Biden is unable to continue in office due to health and age issues, she is ready to fulfill her constitutional responsibilities and take over the presidency.
