Holding a joystick, the young players complete simulated actions such as takeoff, landing, climb, and emergency landing on computer screens... Recently, the 2023 National Youth Simulated Flight Challenge was held at the Shanghai Science and Technology Sports Management Center. This competition has attracted 19 representative teams from 12 schools in Shanghai, as well as more than 400 primary and secondary school students who love simulation flying, to participate. Excellent players will have the opportunity to participate in the national competition.
"Simulated flight motion" refers to the digital simulation of various elements encountered in real flight through computer software, and the motion of flight simulation control and flight sensory feedback through external hardware devices. By using visual, auditory, force sensing, and overload simulation technologies, a virtual flight scene is constructed, and a real-time simulation system composed of simulation software and hardware equipment is used for flight training or evaluation, spanning multiple fields such as sports, education, aviation, military, computer, electronics, and virtual reality.

The National Youth Simulated Flight Championship, as a whitelist competition project of the Ministry of Education, has a positive significance in improving the comprehensive quality, innovation, and hands-on operation ability of primary and secondary school students. The flight technology score of this competition consists of two parts: knowledge and technology. The final score of the athletes is calculated based on the sum of 10% of the knowledge score and 90% of the technology score. Only after the knowledge competition meets the standards can they participate in the technology competition. The competition score shall be based on the automated evaluation program, automated evaluation rules, and national youth simulation flight competition rules of the Air Traffic Control Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, with a focus on cultivating the concept and common sense of safe flight among young enthusiasts.
The competition is divided into primary and junior high school male and female groups. Knowledge based competitions include but are not limited to classic aircraft models, aircraft structures, flight control surfaces, instrument related knowledge used in flight, recognition of airport signs and markings, unit conversion in aircraft data, Chinese and English pronunciation of numbers and letters in land air dialogues, as well as professional English vocabulary or abbreviations involved in the above content; Technical subjects include Red Bull Langlet Racing, Y-Cross Aircolumn Racing, Z-This Five Sides Championship, Tempelhoff Journey Challenge, Istanbul Journey Challenge, Individual Eloque Commentary, and Men's and Women's Six Team Tournament.

The contestants focus on controlling the direction of the computer while using data such as speed, distance, and horizon to maintain safe flight. Referee Han Yu introduced that through competitions, players can demonstrate their operational abilities from multiple perspectives, improve their interdisciplinary and multi task coordination abilities. A young contestant expressed that their dream is to "become a pilot, fly fighter jets, and defend our country."
Conducting simulated flight sports is of great significance in promoting the coordinated development of cultural learning and physical exercise among young people, promoting national defense education, pilot recruitment, and training of aviation sports industry practitioners. In January 2022, Shanghai's first science and technology sports simulation flight training base was unveiled at Fengbang Senior High School; In October, Shanghai Wanxiang School and Shanghai Zhuangxing School were listed as "Youth Aviation Schools" by the China Aviation Association. At present, two free courses on simulated flight have been selected as the first batch of comprehensive quality education platforms in Shanghai. Among the aviation sports currently being carried out in Shanghai, simulated flight is particularly down-to-earth and popular among people of all ages.
