On the afternoon of July 28th, after several months of upgrading and renovation, the Garden Community Cafeteria located on the first floor of the First Citizen Post Station at No. 120 Shuidian Road in Hongkou District was officially opened for business, with its curved glass windows, elegant tables and chairs, artworks and decorations in the wall cabinets, and a dazzling array of dishes.
In 2007, this place opened as the earliest community elderly meal assistance service point in Shanghai. Over the past 16 years, it has gradually shifted from serving elderly meals to serving the entire population and has become widely known among surrounding residents. The newly unveiled community cafeteria is not only brighter and more spacious, capable of accommodating more than 100 people dining at the same time, but also adopts a more user-friendly design. The cafeteria currently offers a total of 500 dishes, offering approximately 15 breakfast dishes, over 20 lunch and dinner dishes per day, with no daily variations.
Asking for the needs of the people and building a "smart canteen" around them
At 11 noon, 75 year old Grandma Hua arrived at the community cafeteria with familiarity. As soon as I entered the door, I exclaimed, "Oh, this place is getting more and more comfortable!"

Zhang Li, Deputy Director of Guangzhong Road Sub district, introduced that the upgrade and renovation of the community cafeteria originated from residents' consultation and discussion. At that time, the sub district relied on the party building platform of Huayuan Street to widely understand the needs of surrounding community residents and white-collar workers in park building enterprises; The design of the community cafeteria was improved by listening to the opinions and suggestions of the members and representatives of the Huayuan Road neighborhood governance committee and community experts, and inviting them to participate in the design of the plan together. Many valuable opinions were put forward from the perspective of the masses.
For example, in terms of functional settings, considering that the majority of diners are elderly and it is inconvenient to go upstairs and downstairs, the community cafeteria has adjusted the original dining area on the second floor to the first floor and laid anti slip adhesive on the ground to make it safer for customers to walk. At the same time, in order to meet the dining needs of people with disabilities, the cafeteria has specially set up dining tables for people with disabilities, and created age friendly and accessible toilets. In addition, in response to the activity needs raised by many people, a separate baking area has been opened on the second floor of the cafeteria, which is used to carry out special activities such as culinary education, elderly health meal preparation, and pastry baking during non peak dining hours, enriching the daily lives of residents and white-collar workers.
In addition to the renovation of spatial design, the use of intelligent digital devices is another highlight of the community cafeteria upgrade. In the preliminary research, many residents reported to the street that although the cafeteria dishes are rich, their prices and types are different, which has brought them "difficulty in choosing"; At the same time, due to the dense surrounding communities and businesses, there are many diners, and many people complain that the queue during peak hours is too long, which affects the dining experience.
In response to these issues, the street has visited buildings in parks such as Huayuanfang and Kaide Hongkou multiple times, discussed intelligent management experience with enterprises, merchants, and other co construction units, and ultimately decided to install an intelligent meal preparation table with a display screen. In addition to displaying the price of the dishes, the nutritional composition parameters of the protein, fat, carbohydrates, and other nutrients of the dishes are fully displayed. Each plate is equipped with an intelligent settlement chip, and customers only need to select their favorite dishes based on the prices of the dishes in the preparation table and put them on the plate. They can quickly know the prices of the dishes by recognizing them in the sensing area of the cashier. The process of picking up trays, selecting dishes, and settling accounts only takes a few seconds, greatly improving efficiency.
The dishes can be traced back to the whole process, and the elderly can enjoy preferential treatment.
In addition to daily dishes that are not duplicated, the Garden Community Cafeteria will also launch "limited" dishes based on the 24 solar terms, and irregularly launch children's meals during holidays such as winter and summer, and June 1st. By continuously "renovating the patterns", it will meet the needs of diverse and all age customers.
Most of the surveyed residents expressed that the prices of the dishes are acceptable. It is reported that the cafeteria has been adhering to strict control over procurement channels for many years, emphasizing quality and health. From ingredients to seasonings, all are purchased by dedicated vehicles from well-known brands in large supermarkets, ensuring the freshness and taste of the dishes; At the same time, the procurement process is recorded, achieving full traceability and ensuring safety.
At the same time, taking the new opening of the Garden Community Canteen as an opportunity, the Garden Neighborhood Party Building Alliance also issued the "Clean Your Plate Campaign" initiative to all alliance members and community residents. The Garden Community Canteen also actively advocates scientific and cultural diet, guides customers to order meals on demand, places the "Clean Your Plate Campaign" billboard in the canteen, and innovatively introduces the "small dishes" service. Customers can choose large or small dishes according to their own actual needs, and put an end to food waste. In addition, the canteen will also provide personalized meals such as "sugar free meals" for specific people's needs, such as diabetes patients.
