Shanghai University of Technology has initiated empirical research and released "Reading Research in the Short Video Era". The report shows that short videos, as a new way of reading, are not a substitute for traditional reading, but rather integrate and promote each other's development.
In response to people's concerns about short videos, Professor Chen Jie, Executive Director of the Zhejiang University Digital Publishing Research Center and Executive Deputy Editor of Zhejiang University Press, said that the evolution and integration of reading media is an inevitable result of the development of the times. We do not need to be overly nervous. "Even the paper that we highly admire today has gone through a long period of adaptation when applied as a new content medium.". Especially as a researcher in the publishing industry or a practitioner in the book industry, it should be noted that the "hot attributes" of short videos have further promoted the transformation of current reading forms towards paperless, digital, and visual, playing a positive role in the current mass reading.
She also pointed out that no matter how media forms change, the most important thing is always content, and the essence of publishing is to spread high-quality content and deliver knowledge to readers. She encouraged the relevant departments of the publishing house to actively explore the integration of short video publishing, and took "Delivery Poet Wang Jibing" as an example, pointing out that good content does not necessarily lie in beautiful and high-end forms, but more relies on grounded and touching stories behind the scenes to resonate with the audience. "From this perspective, how to make good use of short videos, create content that combines entertainment and knowledge, and widely spread it is a key direction that needs to be explored in the current development of integrated publishing."
In addition, Chen Jie noticed a set of numbers in the report, with 63.59% of respondents stating that they prefer short videos as an interactive reading experience compared to reading alone. She quoted writer Han Han's statement that "reading is no longer an island for one person", pointing out that in the era of short videos, reading not only achieves interaction between readers and authors, but also real-time communication and interaction between readers, providing a new reading experience for the public, which is one of the reasons why short videos are popular among the public.
