Knowledge short videos are a new form of reading that is in line with the development of the times
Recently, Shanghai University of Technology released a report on "Reading Research in the Short Video Era" and organized expert discussions. The report found through empirical research that short videos have become a new type of reading method that meets the needs and is popular among the public, and has a positive significance in promoting reading, knowledge, and cultural popularization for the whole population.
At the seminar, Xu Shengguo, Director of the National Reading Research Center of the China Academy of Press and Publication, acknowledged the conclusion of the report. He pointed out that our research on reading should not be limited to a certain period or a single form of reading, but should be viewed from a macro perspective of the historical context and future trends of reading development. Therefore, the answer to the question of whether watching knowledge short videos is considered reading can be clearly found.
"If we look at the long history of human civilization, text reading has only been a short few thousand years. Imagine a book with three versions: text, audio, and video, then the essence of these three versions is not different, only in various forms of content presentation. If the timeline extends further into the future, humans may be able to present knowledge and content through the metaverse, brain computer interface, virtual reality, and other means, such as having a direct conversation with Confucius in the metaverse, copying" The Republic "through the brain computer interface, and so on. Are these forms also considered reading?"
Xu Shengguo believes that reading is not strictly speaking "reading words", but understanding the thoughts and wisdom behind words, enhancing people's spiritual realm and life character. From this perspective, short video reading has a certain degree of inevitability of the times.

Of course, Xu Shengguo also pointed out that short videos and text have their own characteristics. The former leans towards visual senses, while the latter leans towards logical thinking. How to combine the two characteristics and make good use of short videos to promote reading is a new issue we face. "For example, the integration of multiple media for knowledge dissemination, some are disseminated through text, some are presented through video, and then integrated within the same content framework."
At the same time, we must recognize the high efficiency and breadth of knowledge dissemination through short videos. "Wherever the users are, our knowledge dissemination needs to go.". Faced with such a vast user base, the publishing industry should actively integrate with short videos in both knowledge production and dissemination, making short video reading a lever to promote nationwide reading and an important component of popular culture and life.
