Encourage high-quality short videos to "flow back" and enrich the library of book publishing content
Recently, Shanghai University of Technology released a report on "Reading Research in the Short Video Era" and organized expert discussions. The report found through empirical research that short videos have become a new type of reading method that meets the needs and is popular among the public, and has a positive significance in promoting reading, knowledge, and cultural popularization for the whole population.
The report points out that short video reading is not a substitute for traditional reading, but rather a mutually reinforcing relationship. The integration of short video reading and traditional reading provides the public with diverse reading choices and constructs a new reading ecosystem. Li Jianhong, President of the Publishing and Distribution Research Journal of the China Academy of Press and Publication, agrees with this. She said, "With the evolution of technology, the types of reading are also constantly changing, from paper books to online and mobile reading, and then to audiovisual forms such as audiobooks and short videos. In the future, there will be fewer single attribute reading products and more integrated attribute products."
The report found that among respondents who frequently or always read physical books, 37.75% prefer to watch book related short videos, 67.11% believe that book related short videos can enhance reading interest, and 79.25% have purchased books due to relevant short video content recommendations. Among the respondents who read less paper books, 23.78% always and frequently watch short videos related to books, 71.41% believe that short videos related to books can enhance their interest in reading books, and 70.45% have purchased books due to relevant short video content recommendations. It can be seen that short videos play a positive role in stimulating reading interest and expanding the readership, spreading knowledge while promoting the sales of text books.

Li Jianhong believes that using short videos and live streaming to help promote book marketing and traffic is an important manifestation of short videos promoting traditional reading. "By sharing their own reading experiences, interpretations, or comments, anchors can create a strong sense of immersion and presence, which can effectively promote book sales."
In addition, Li Jianhong also pointed out that short videos, as a new form of content, are more worthy of attention, especially high-quality knowledge content has the opportunity to "flow back" to the publishing industry and transform into paper books. Knowledge based short video creators can translate paper books into short video content for promotion and dissemination. On the contrary, excellent short video content can also be selected and refined by publishing houses to become paper books. This provides new ideas for the mutual development of short videos and traditional reading.
