Many teenagers smoke it for pleasure. Strictly control the sales of "laughing gas"! The German government plans to take action to "save the children"
German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said on the 24th that the government plans to introduce new regulations to strictly restrict the sales of nitrous oxide gas, commonly known as "laughing gas", and is worried that more and more teenagers in Germany are harming their health by smoking "laughing gas".
"Laughing gas" is a colorless, sweet gas commonly used as a medical anesthetic. "Laughing gas" is addictive and harmful. After inhalation, blood oxygen saturation will drop rapidly, and a series of symptoms such as dizziness and chest tightness due to hypoxia will occur. Inhalation of large amounts will cause hallucinations, audio-visual dysfunction and muscle dysfunction. A series of side effects such as reduced contractility can cause damage to the central nervous system and even lead to paralysis.
Current German law does not restrict the sale and use of "laughing gas", but this gas is relatively easy to obtain on the market and the price is not high. Because of the desire for temporary pleasure, many teenagers will take drugs at parties. The medical and health circles are worried that the proliferation of "laughing gas" will endanger the health of young people, and urge the German government to take measures to restrict the recreational use of "laughing gas".
Lauterbach said in an interview with German TV station on the 24th that the government will "soon introduce regulations." Possible measures include classifying "laughing gas" as a psychoactive substance, and its sales and possession will be strictly restricted. Given that nitrous oxide gas is also used in industry, the German government will not ban it entirely.
Doctor Falk Rimroth told the TV station: "Nowadays, 'laughing gas' is sold even at kiosks near schools. This must be stopped. Anesthetics should not be sold in the general market and should be in the hands of doctors. Not with gummy bears.”
Lauterbach said parents should educate their children to stay away from the gas until the government introduces relevant restrictions. "It may sound fun and harmless, but it's not...it's very dangerous for children and young people."
