Expert: "The Second Combination" provides a systematic response to the Marxist | Cultural | Controversy in cracking down on the "Controversy between Ancient and Modern China and the West"

In order to deeply study and understand the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech at the forum on cultural inheritance and development, a seminar on "New Culture, New Civilization, and New Mission" was held at the Party School of the Shanghai Municipal CPC Committee on 13 June. The conference was jointly organized by the Party School of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Shanghai Xi Jinping Research Center for Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

Professor Chen Weiping from the Philosophy Department of East China Normal University elaborated on his views on how to understand the "second combination". Why should we combine? It is a systematic response to the resolution of the "debate between ancient and modern China and the West", and it is also an inevitable result of the historical development of China since modern times.The practical foundation of this "necessary path" is the historical dialectics of negation and negation. What is the intrinsic mechanism of the second combination? It's about change and integration. If there is no change in traditional culture, Marxism cannot be accepted in China. But change is for identification, and to identify, it must be combined with our original traditions and become a part of the development of the entire tradition. With these two aspects, we can say that "combination" produces not simple physical reactions but profound chemical reactions.

Among them, inclusivity is a relatively important term, which fundamentally determines the historical orientation of communication, exchange, and integration of the Chinese nation, determines the harmonious pattern of diverse coexistence of various religious beliefs in China, and determines the open mindedness of Chinese culture towards world civilization. "In the past, when discussing traditional Chinese culture, it often gave foreigners the impression that it was too emphasizing the subjectivity of Chinese culture and excluding foreign cultures. This is actually a misunderstanding. From the perspective of the development of world cultural civilization, a single and pure culture has no vitality. To maintain vitality, culture must constantly absorb and transform the beneficial factors of foreign cultures and combine them in the process of development."

Professor Zhu Cheng from the Philosophy Department of East China Normal University explained the historical and global significance of the "second combination" from four aspects. One is from the perspective of human civilization. The development of human civilization is the result of multicultural integration and innovation. The combination of the basic principles of Marxism and excellent traditional Chinese culture not only means the continuation and inheritance of civilization, but also the integration and creation of modern world civilization based on Marxism. Secondly, from the innovative perspective of the integration and development of Marxism and traditional Chinese culture. The "second combination" also means the renewal and development of two traditions themselves. Marxism has the theoretical quality of keeping up with the times, and Chinese traditional culture also has the tradition of "Japanese innovation". Marxism provides modern guidance for the creative transformation and innovative development of excellent traditional Chinese culture, while excellent traditional Chinese culture provides the foundation for the sinicization of Marxism's contemporary development. Third, from the perspective of the breadth of Chinese path to modernization. The scope of the "second combination" is the whole Chinese path to modernization road, pointing to the new form of human civilization. Fourthly, from the long-term perspective of building a community with a shared future for mankind. The second combination must be oriented towards the world, continuing to embrace the world and participate in the global "Hundred Schools of Thought" competition, in order to truly integrate into the world.

Huang Lizhi, a professor at the School of Marxism at the Shanghai Municipal Party School of the Communist Party of China, believes that the most important thing in adhering to the "two combinations" is to respect the past without returning to it, and to uphold the right and not the old. He believes that cultural subjectivity is mainly reflected in three aspects: independence, dominance, and autonomy or creativity.
