Planting the seeds of "excellent traditional Chinese culture" for children, the Hongkou District Youth Reading Festival begins reading | Hongkou District | Tradition
"Comparing the borrowing lists of boys and girls, we found that boys are more inclined to read works with stirring plots and telling stories about their country and the world... Girls are more inclined to read literary works with delicate emotions and beautiful brushstrokes... In the blink of an eye, the reading report of Hongkou District Public Library has been released for ten years, and the library and young readers have grown together, achieving significant growth and progress in reading resources and reading habits." With the narration of outstanding student representatives from Lu Xun Junior High School, the "2021-2022 Hongkou District Public Library Youth Reading Report" was officially released, marking the beginning of the 11th Hongkou District Youth Reading Festival.
The Hongkou District Youth Reading Festival began in 2012 and is held once a year during the summer. Each festival focuses on specific themes and carries out reading promotion activities that are both informative and entertaining. Over the past decade, it has attracted nearly 80000 participants with its rich reading content and diverse reading forms, becoming a beautiful memory of the summer life of several generations of primary and secondary school students in Hongkou. Last year, due to the impact of the epidemic, the Reading Festival was suspended for one session. This year, the Hongkou District Youth Reading Festival, which has gone through ten sessions, will restart with higher quality cultural content, more exciting presentation methods, and a larger range of regional spatial linkage, allowing more Hongkou youth to enjoy high-quality spiritual and cultural life during the summer.
It is reported that this Youth Reading Festival will last from July to September. With the theme of "Love China and Read Summer", it will launch a total of 14 activities, including "China in Ancient Books" master lecture hall, "China-Chic flower growers" interactive experience, "Reading Summer Time" challenge book list, and "More than books in books" research activities, which will sow the seeds of "excellent traditional Chinese culture" in the hearts of children.

Among them, the "China in Classics" Master Lecture Hall will invite first-class experts and scholars in the field of contemporary social sciences, such as Luo Yuming, Ge Jianxiong, Li Tiangang, Shao Yiping, and Fang Xiaoyi, to interpret the characteristics and connotations of China's iconic cultures from oracle bone inscriptions and the Book of Songs to Tang poetry and Song poetry in a simple and easy way for young readers, and to trace the origin and flow of Chinese civilization.
In the interactive experience of "China-Chic florists", young readers will have the opportunity to experience the charm of Chinese traditional intangible cultural heritage such as "tenon and mortise structure, block printing, filigree enamel" through hands-on practice.
The "Reading Summer Time" Challenge Book List, as a brand project of the district library, has been held continuously for four seasons. In the fifth season of this year, a selection of challenge books was selected for young readers in four age groups: preschool, elementary school, elementary school, and high school. We look forward to more young readers joining the ranks of the summer "Reading Challenge".

The "inside books, outside books, not just books" study activity will comprehensively cover different types of public cultural spaces such as 8 streets, public libraries, and physical bookstores in Hongkou District through innovative and diverse presentation methods such as cultural walks, themed exhibitions, and painting collections, thereby achieving a wider range of cultural popularization.
Sun Mingyang, who is 12 years old, is a true "reading expert". In 2020, he borrowed 247 books, and from 2021 to 2022, he borrowed 432 more books. He told the opening ceremony of the 11th Hongkou District Youth Reading Festival held on the morning of July 11th that the first lecture of the "China in Classics" master lecture, "The Joy of Reading Ancient Poetry," officially began. Young readers from various primary and secondary schools in Hongkou District listened to Professor Luo Yuming from the Chinese Department of Fudan University's witty and humorous explanations, sometimes laughing heartily, and sometimes listening attentively, immersed in the beauty of ancient poetry.
This weekend, the first research activity of "Inside and Outside Books, Beyond Books" will be launched: "Walking Reading - Exploring the Origin of Shanghai and Listening to the Memory of Hongkou". Professor Li Tiangang from Fudan University will lead young people from Shanghai to go deep into Hongkou, explore the urban origin of Shanghai, and experience the humanistic memory of Hongkou. In late July, the "Big World in Little People's Books" comic exhibition will be held at "Jinchao 8th Lane", with the theme of "Shanghai Beach in the comic and the faces of all living beings". It will showcase the various industries and forms of Shanghai in the first half of the 20th century in a visual and textual form, presenting the lively folk life of old Shanghai to young people.
