How did Shanghai gradually develop from a primitive settlement to today's super large city? In the pattern of diverse and integrated Chinese civilization, what kind of unique existence is she? "It is difficult to determine where Shanghai comes from without clarifying where it is headed." In the view of Yu Siyan, a representative of the Municipal People's Congress and director of the Jinshan District Museum, "Shanghai" is an important topic that must be answered in the new era. It is suggested to launch a major research project on "Shanghai Civilization Traceability Project" to clarify the development trajectory of Shanghai. Recently, this suggestion received the latest response from the handling department.

Clarify the development context and "correct the name" of Shanghai

"Currently, there are differences in understanding among experts, scholars, and citizens regarding the origin of Shanghai's cities," said Yu Siyan. For example, some citizens believe that Shanghai used to be a small fishing village in the Song Dynasty. After the opening of Shanghai as a port in modern times, with the emergence of concessions, it quickly became a metropolis in the East. Some scholars believe that the urban construction history of Shanghai originated from Shanghai County, with a history of over 700 years. Some scholars believe that the development of Shanghai has gone through a process of "Shanghai settlement Shanghai affairs Shanghai town Shanghai county", while others believe that based on the more than 6300 square kilometers under the jurisdiction of Shanghai today, we can trace back what happened on this land.

"The existence of these differences in understanding reflects, on the one hand, the complex and extraordinary development process that Shanghai, this great city, has experienced, and on the other hand, it also reflects that our research on this is still insufficient and there is still no universal consensus." Yu Siyan believes that why "Shanghai" comes from and where Shanghai comes from is a proposition that we must answer, which has profound significance for better exploring, interpreting, and disseminating Shanghai's history and culture. Therefore, Yu Siyan suggested launching a major research project on the "Shanghai Civilization Traceability Project" to clarify the development context of Shanghai and correct its name.

"Conducting this research project involves multiple functional departments and disciplines," said Yu Siyan. "This research project involves archaeology, history, historical geography, geography, paleography, astronomy, geology, environmental science, natural science history, economics, sociology, anthropology, intangible cultural heritage, modern analytical technology, modern dating technology, and other disciplines. It is recommended to fully leverage Shanghai's scientific research advantages and invite top experts from various fields to form an expert advisory committee, which will serve as an important advisor and intelligence base for the Shanghai Civilization Traceability Project.".

Deepen and thoroughly understand the concepts of "discussing history through materialism" and "enhancing credibility through history"

In recent years, the Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism has been focusing on strengthening archaeological and historical research work, and has also been continuously promoting the tracing of Shanghai's civilization. For example, fully implementing archaeological exploration and excavation. We have fully completed the exploration work for archaeological sites of cultural relics protection units at or above the municipal level, and clarified the resources of archaeological sites. As of now, a total of 43 archaeological sites have been discovered in Shanghai, including 5 announced as national key cultural relics protection units, 14 cultural relics protection units in Shanghai, and 7 district level cultural relics protection units. These long-term and continuous archaeological achievements constitute important evidence for the 6000 year history of Shanghai and have also pushed Shanghai's archaeological work to a new level.

Based on the unique characteristics of Shanghai archaeology, Shanghai has carried out a long-term academic research plan. We have conducted continuous archaeological excavations on the Songze Site, Fuquanshan Site, Qinglong Town Site, and the Yangtze River Estuary No. 2 sunken ship, with a focus on studying the origin process of Chinese civilization, the Maritime Silk Road, and urban history, and have achieved significant results. The naming of Songze culture forms the basic framework of the archaeological cultural lineage of the Neolithic period in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

The Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism stated that in the next step, it will work with relevant departments and units in the city and district to continuously increase the efforts to trace the origin of Shanghai civilization, strengthen the depth of historical research, promote the digital transformation of cultural relics, highlight the main role of archaeology in the inheritance of urban history and culture, and deepen the two major articles of "discussing history with things" and "enhancing trust with history", to empirically outline the development of Chinese civilization and Shanghai culture.

In response to the representative's proposal to establish an expert consultation mechanism, the Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism stated that it will work with relevant departments at the city and city levels, in conjunction with relevant universities and research institutions in the city, to jointly promote research on the origin of Shanghai's civilization and carry out interdisciplinary and multi technological joint research. At the same time, establish a regular expert consultation mechanism and invite experts from relevant fields such as archaeology, history, geology, and geography in this city to provide advice for relevant research.

"We will strengthen research in key areas. Strengthen the collation and value interpretation of archaeological results." The Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism stated that it will launch the Shanghai Civilization Exploration Project to deepen the study of the origin, characteristics and forms of Chinese civilization. Around the Majiabang culture, Songze culture, Guangfulin culture, Maqiao culture and other related ancient cultural sites, in-depth archaeological investigation. Support Qingpu, Songjiang, Minhang and other districts to build a cultural and tourism integration project for the transformation of archaeological achievements of "the source of Shanghai", "the root of Shanghai" and "the foundation of Shanghai", and outline and display the local historical and cultural context of Shanghai in an empirical way. Further strengthen the all-round display and publicity of archaeological achievements, and continue to promote the "why" series of archaeological cultural brand building.

"We will also vigorously develop underwater archaeology and scientific and technological archaeology." The Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism said that it will strengthen the traceability research of Shanghai's civilization in the field of underwater archaeology and scientific and technological archaeology according to the relevant planning arrangements of the National Cutural Heritage Administration. At the same time, strengthen the application and transformation of technological innovation in archaeological work.
