"Jewish Refugees and Shanghai" Theme Exhibition Holds Holocaust in New York | Theme | Refugees
On August 1st local time, the themed exhibition "Shanghai, Once Home - Jewish Refugees and Shanghai" opened in New York, USA. The exhibition selects more than 30 oral stories of former Jewish refugees and their descendants, copies of nearly 30 precious cultural relics and historical materials, over 200 photos, documentary videos, and other precious historical materials, telling overseas audiences the story of Shanghai's open embrace and acceptance of Jewish refugees.
Chinese Consul General in New York, Huang Ping, attended the opening ceremony of the themed exhibition and expressed gratitude to Shanghai for hosting the exhibition in the United States. He said in his speech that through exhibitions, many new and old friends from China and the United States gather together to revisit history. It is essential to enhance understanding, inherit friendship, and promote unity and dialogue in cultural exchange and mutual learning.
New York Mayor Adams dispatched a special representative to present congratulatory letters to the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial and exhibition organizers. Adams highly praised the theme exhibition and said in his congratulatory letter, "We hope to promote dialogue, advocate tolerance, and inspire hope for the future by commemorating the victims of the Holocaust and sharing their stories. Let's work together to build a brighter and more inclusive future."
The "Jewish Refugees and Shanghai" themed exhibition is the first overseas promotion activity of the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial Hall since its expansion and opening in 2020. The theme exhibition will continue to be held at the Fosun Building in New York until August 14th. The English version of the documentary "Chasing the Jewish Legacy of Shanghai" will also be aired during the exhibition. Chen Jian, the director of the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial Museum, said that the museum is committed to protecting, researching, and disseminating the history of "Jewish refugees and Shanghai". The brand new English version of Shanghai City feature film "Shanghai Let's Meet", produced by the Information Office of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, was unveiled at the opening event of the theme exhibition, vividly showing the sample of Chinese path to modernization. The image film and theme exhibition are showcased on the same stage, bringing together the historical warmth of the Shanghai people's acceptance of Jewish refugees and the vitality of today's modern international metropolis in the same time and space. Many American friends who participated in the event expressed their hope to have the opportunity to experience the charm of this city in Shanghai.
This themed exhibition is hosted by the Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Shanghai Fosun Public Welfare Foundation, hosted by the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial Hall, and supported by the Chinese Consulate General in New York, the Shanghai Municipal Government Information Office, and the Hongkou District People's Government.
