The Memorial Hall of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China is the most popular, and the "2023 Shanghai Museum Annual Report" is released
On May 18, International Museum Day, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism released the "2023 Shanghai Museum Annual Report". By the end of 2023, there will be 165 museums in Shanghai. Based on Shanghai's permanent population of 24.8745 million in 2023, there will be one museum for every 151,000 people, far exceeding the national average.
Among the 165 museums, there are 48 historical museums, 9 art museums, 7 natural science and technology museums, 14 comprehensive museums, and 87 other themed museums.
Among these museums, the Memorial Hall of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China received a total of 2.938 million visitors last year, becoming the most popular museum; the Shanghai Museum of Natural History, Shanghai Yuyuan Management Office, and Shanghai Museum ranked second, third, and fourth respectively.
In 2023, there will be 7 new registered museums in the city, including the Memorial Hall of the Recording Place of "March of the Volunteers", Shanghai Jiao Tong University Museum, Shanghai Broadcasting Museum, China Modern Press and Publication Museum, Shanghai World Skills Museum, Shanghai Wisdom Bay Additive Manufacturing Culture Museum, Shanghai Red Cross Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall.
The total collection of museums in the city is 2.26 million pieces/set. Among them, there are 239,000 pieces/set of precious cultural relics. The Shanghai Museum has a collection of 1.02 million cultural relics, accounting for half of the city's museum collections. The number of new collections was 15,671 pieces/set, an increase of about 0.6%. Museums across the city have 306 basic exhibitions, 406 temporary exhibitions, 286 online exhibitions, 13 inbound exhibitions, and 10 outbound exhibitions. A total of 23 exhibition improvements and renovations have been completed.
Last year, the city's museums received a total of 30.991 million visitors, a record high, of which 14.834 million were local visitors, accounting for 47.9% of the total visitors and 59.6% of Shanghai's permanent population. There were 6.875 million underage viewers, accounting for 22.2% of the total audience.
It is worth mentioning that last year, the city’s museums’ total cultural and creative revenue reached 230 million yuan. The Shanghai Museum topped the list with 117 million yuan, followed by the Memorial Hall of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in second and third place respectively.
