On the morning of August 3, 2023, Wu Renfu drove with three bottles of water from the crab seedling base in Jintan, Changzhou to the Chongming River Crab Science and Technology Academy of Shanghai Ocean University. This trip to my mother's house is to invite professional personnel to test the water quality and ensure the safety of this year's harvest.

July and August are the peak periods for the growth of crab seedlings, and it is also the hottest time of the year. The water quality and environment often trouble farmers, and they are frequent visitors to science and technology academies during this period. Wu Renfu, who graduated from the Science and Technology Academy in 2018, now has over 1500 acres of crab farming bases across the country. Although these bases are distributed throughout the country, Chongming, the Science and Technology Academy, has always been his "mother's home".

Professor Cheng Yongxu led the students for testing, and all the data met the standards. He gave Wu Renfu a reassuring pill.

In 2015, Wu Renfu, a first-year graduate student, came to the Science and Technology Academy to study and almost every day he met Fang Yonghong, a local farmer from Chongming who came to the academy to learn. At the age of 18, Fang Yonghong started raising crabs and realized that he had to rely on the power of technology to increase production. In 2009, Professor Cheng Yongxu from Shanghai Ocean University led his team to establish a small science and technology institute in Zhuxin Town, Chongming. Fang Yonghong would come and listen all day, watching students conduct experiments and asking questions. His classmates engaged in practice, and he led them to their own crab pond to share their experiences, accidentally becoming the "dirt professor" in the eyes of his classmates. Now, he provides 100 acres of land for productive scientific research for free every year, and the crab farming industry is thriving.

The doubling of production and the expansion of scale have made Fang Yonghong deeply aware of the importance of applied technology talents, and the students who spend their days doing scientific research in his crab pond are the targets that Fang Yonghong is targeting.

"The professor spends all day rubbing against the mud in my crab pond, and the students he brings out are definitely right! The students in the Science and Technology Academy are all those I watch practicing in the field, and they can be used with them. There is nothing else to choose from!" Fang Yonghong admitted that finding a suitable entrepreneurial partner is not easy, and external trust cannot be trusted. Let's rely on cooperation to test it. The crab seedling cultivation cycle is long, and there is no time, and there is no time to delay.

"Renfu can endure hardship and has two talents! Every time I come to him for help when encountering problems, he always sneaks into my field, mainly because he can help me solve them." After three years of graduate school, Fang Yonghong greatly appreciated Wu Renfu, who often lives and eats together. Before Wu Renfu graduated, he talked to him about his idea of expanding the base to the whole country. "If you provide the technology, I will provide the money, and we will earn half of it."

Five years have passed, and Fang Yonghong and Wu Renfu's company has established six breeding bases in Shandong, Jiangsu, and Shanghai.

Wu Renfu is helping Fang Yonghong debug the oxygenation equipment in the crab pond.

Cheng Yongxu is guiding Wu Renfu on how to use odor to distinguish the ammonia and nitrogen content in crab pond sludge.

Cheng Yongxu and Wu Renfu observed the growth of crab seedlings and explained to students how to distinguish the quality of crab seedlings.

"What we are solving is how to raise crab seedlings, why they are raised this way, and the specific operation must go to the field and work with the farmers. The production and breeding laws are greatly influenced by practical factors, and only by combining practical operation and theory can the efficiency of technological transformation be improved and verified." Today, 59 year old Cheng Yongxu still insists on taking students to the crab pond.

After working in the water for a long time, even wearing water pants, Wu Renfu's shoes were still soaked through.

"Five years after graduation, although our business has grown, we cannot do without this small courtyard." Wu Renfu mentioned that a few days ago, a breeding base in Shandong encountered insect infestation, and the water peanuts that provided a growth environment for crab seedlings were eaten up by the insects. This situation had never been encountered before. After consulting with Professor Cheng and conducting several rounds of experimental verification, he accompanied him to Shandong and used ecological prevention measures to protect the water peanuts at the base, resolving the crisis.

In his spare time, Wu Renfu sought advice on video editing techniques from graduate students at the Science and Technology Academy.

Mr. Lu, who was responsible for cooking for the students of the Science and Technology Academy, was also a crab fry farmer. Wu Renfu introduced Mr. Lu to the situation of his Changzhou base.

With the increasing popularity in the industry, there are also many people who come to poach Wu Renfu. Some offer an annual salary of one million yuan, but Wu Renfu still politely refuses. In his view, being able to stay at the forefront of crab seedling cultivation technology is the key to a greater future. He has to keep drilling in the crab pond of the Science and Technology Academy, and Professor Cheng has to keep taking the "scriptures" here.

It is understood that Shanghai Ocean University has built 7 science and technology academies, distributed in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian and other places. Currently, there are 3 PhDs and more than 10 Master's degree holders conducting long-term research on aquaculture technology at Chongming Science and Technology Academy in Shanghai. On the basis of completing relevant experiments, they guide farmers on how to carry out rice crayfish farming, rice Chinese mitten crab farming, and rice shrimp crab mixed farming. They also actively communicate and exchange ideas with farmers, answer their questions, and solve the problems they encounter during the farming process. In response to the aquaculture challenges raised by farmers, they designed targeted experiments to overcome them and evaluated the ecosystem service value of different rice fishing modes. Practice "industry academia research" in the crab ponds of farmers, cultivating applied talents that can be used by enterprises.
