On August 31, 2023, the Intermediate People's Court of Xiamen City, Fujian Province, publicly held a first instance trial of the bribery case of Zhang Bencai, former Party Secretary and Prosecutor General of the Shanghai People's Procuratorate.
The People's Procuratorate of Xiamen City, Fujian Province has filed a lawsuit accusing that from 2005 to 2020, the defendant Zhang Bencai took advantage of his position as Secretary and President of the Party Committee of the Procuratorate Daily, Director of the Film and Television Center of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, Director of the Office of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, Secretary of the Party Group and Procurator General of the Shanghai People's Procuratorate, and provided assistance to relevant units and individuals in matters such as land development, enterprise operation, relocation, and work transfer. He directly or through others illegally received property, totaling more than RMB 48.32 million. The procuratorial organs have requested that Zhang Bencai be held criminally responsible for the crime of bribery.
During the trial, the procuratorial organs presented relevant evidence, and the defendant Zhang Bencai and his defense counsel conducted cross examination. Both the prosecution and defense fully expressed their opinions under the auspices of the court. Zhang Bencai made a final statement and expressed his confession and remorse in court. At the end of the trial, the court announced an adjournment and announced the verdict at a later date.
