Russia is now very angry, and it can be said that it is uncontrollable, because Zelensky has just accomplished something big, something that is considered impossible.
Before leaving Türkiye at the weekend, he took away five Ukrainian army officers there, three of whom were senior commanders of the Yasu Battalion.
And it's also very high-profile.
Look at the video sent by Zerensky. A car drives to the airport in Türkiye, and five Ukrainian commanders come down. Zerensky and each of them warmly embrace; Then, everyone boarded the plane together, and in the cabin, these five people took a photo with Zelensky and listened to Zelensky's speech.
Zelensky also pushed on the spot: "We will return from Türkiye and take our heroes home... They can finally reunite with their relatives. The glory belongs to Ukraine."
When he arrived in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, Zelensky also promised to bring back all the remaining prisoners of war.
In Lviv, these five people were also warmly welcomed like heroes. In front of Zelensky and other Ukrainians, the commanders of the Azov battalion swore that they would definitely return to the front line, "We are soldiers, we have sworn, we will continue to fight.".
Zelensky is very happy, and Russia is very angry.
Why?
Because these five individuals were previously prisoners of war, they can no longer appear on the Ukrainian battlefield.
After the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, they were responsible for defending the Yasu Iron and Steel Plant in Mariupol. The fierce battle lasted for three months. In May 2022, the isolated Ukrainian army surrendered to the Russian army.
Under the mediation of Türkiye, Russia and Ukraine reached an agreement on prisoner exchange in September 2022. Russia has released 215 Ukrainian prisoners of war, including over 100 prisoners of war from the Azov camp, in exchange for 55 Russian prisoners. In addition, it has also included Viktor Medvedev, a good friend of Putin and a Ukrainian opposition politician.
In terms of quantity, this is a very unequal exchange of prisoners. But Russia also has conditions, and these Ukrainian prisoners of war cannot return to Ukraine. Türkiye promised that they would stay "absolutely safe" in Türkiye, "live in comfortable conditions until the end of the war", and be placed under the "personal protection" of the President of Türkiye.
In less than a year, the agreement was torn apart. After his visit to Türkiye, Zelensky took away the five most important people.
Can Russia not be angry?
Kremlin spokesperson Peskov harshly criticized this as a betrayal of "trust".
He said that the Russian side had not received any relevant notice in advance. "In this case, Ukraine and Türkiye both violated the regulations".
He further analyzed that the NATO summit was about to be held, and the front line of Türkiye had "failed to counter attack". Turkey was obviously pressured to make this decision to show NATO's "unity", and Russia was "very clear" about this. But he warned that "violating the agreement is not beneficial to anyone.".
Of course, anger turns to anger. Russia still leaves room for Türkiye, and even Peskov helped Türkiye find reasons to say that: Ukraine failed in its counteroffensive and needed commanders urgently; Türkiye was pressured to release.
Is it interesting?
Finally, what do you think?
Let's stick to the rough three points.
Firstly, Zelensky is not a simple person.
No matter what I think of Zelensky, I always feel that one thing must be admitted is that this person is not simple. Without his perseverance and efforts, Ukraine should have collapsed long ago.
He is even exceptionally strong. A few days ago, he visited Bulgaria. When Bulgarian President Radov said that no amount of weapons could solve the Russia-Ukraine conflict; Zelensky turned his face on the spot and fiercely attacked Radoff.
Scared, Radoff quickly demanded that all journalists immediately withdraw from the meeting.
On this trip to Türkiye, Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also wanted to sell his favor, not only openly supporting Ukraine's accession to NATO; Even at the cost of violating the agreement, he was given a big gift to take away five officers, including the commander of the Azov battalion.
Russia is very angry, but there is nothing they can do.
Secondly, Erdogan is not a simple person.
The West disliked him very much. The CIA even conspired to overthrow him in a coup, but he was still reelected and firmly controlled Türkiye.
Moreover, in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Türkiye is a NATO ally, but it clearly refuses to sanction Russia. Erdogan even calls Putin every once in a while, making him the foreign leader with the most contact; After Wagner's rebellion, he was also the first NATO leader to explicitly support Putin.
Even according to the information disclosed by Türkiye, Zelensky visited Türkiye in July, and Putin will also come in August.
That's all for it. The United States is having a headache, Ukraine is satisfied, and Russia dare not offend.
Türkiye in China is really unusual.
Thirdly, Russia is probably only able to sulk.
The agreement, written in black and white, was torn apart like this.
Ukraine certainly cannot believe that Türkiye, with its thick eyebrows and big eyes, is also unreliable now. In addition, the two countries have given each other private gifts, so that the commander of the Azov Battalion has been on the front line again, and Russia cannot start a fire against Türkiye.
I believe Putin must also be very frustrated. What kind of thing is this?
Erdogan should also have taken Putin and dared not do anything to him.
This is the cruel reality, what is the spirit of contract? What country's reputation? What personal friendship? In the face of interests, go to hell with everything.
But this brings another issue, about trust.
I have said before that there is at least one thing worth affirming on the Russian Ukrainian battlefield, which is that no matter how fierce the battle is, both sides will exchange prisoners of war after a period of time. This at least shows that although Russia and Ukraine have a red eye, they still abide by the basic rules of war.
But now, agreements are meant to be torn apart. If at least trust is lost, how can negotiations continue? How can we exchange prisoners?
At least, I dare not let Türkiye keep it.
