Zakharova: Can you just change your name if you can't dismantle it?, Ukraine "Motherland" Monument or Renamed Kiev | Mother | Ukraine
According to the website of the Russian newspaper "Shimbun", Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova made a sarcastic comment on July 29th regarding the possibility of renaming the "Motherland" monument in Kiev to the "Ukraine Mother" monument.
Zakharova wrote on her Telegraph channel, "It's very principled. If it can't be dismantled, then change the name."
The news that the monument will be renamed was announced by Yuri Savchuk, the director of the Ukrainian Museum of World War II History, earlier on the 29th. He said that the decision was made at the academic committee meeting of the museum, hoping to obtain approval from the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy on the eve of Ukraine's Independence Day on August 24th.
It is reported that on July 26th, the Kyiv authorities began dismantling the Soviet emblem on the "Motherland" sculpture shield, with plans to replace it with the trident shape on the Ukrainian emblem.
According to reports, since 2015, Ukraine has implemented a policy of de communism within the legal framework condemning communism and Nazi regimes, renaming several streets and facilities with names that have some connection to the Soviet Union, and demolishing a number of monuments and commemorative plaques.
