Wufang: Black Sea Seawater Salinity Rapidly Decline Marine Ecology Science Center | Hydroelectric Power Station | Seawater
On June 11th local time, the Ukrainian state news agency reported that the salinity of the Black Sea water had sharply decreased after the damage accident to the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam.
According to reports, experts from the Ukrainian State Ecological Monitoring Agency collected three seawater samples in the waters near Odessa. Experimental tests showed that the salinity in the waters near Odessa was almost one-third lower than normal seawater salinity.

The decrease in seawater salinity will pose a threat to the survival of plankton, fish, and dolphins in the sea. In addition, dead phytoplankton will sink to the lower layers of the sea, absorbing a large amount of oxygen and turning the oxygen zone into a hydrogen sulfide zone. Viktor Komolin, director of the Ukrainian Marine Ecology Science Center, said, "This will have an impact on benthic organisms.".
