White House announcement: Biden visits Vietnam next month
According to the Associated Press on August 28th, the White House announced that President Joe Biden will travel to Vietnam next month to meet with Vietnamese Communist Party Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other Vietnamese leaders.
According to reports, Biden will visit the Vietnamese capital for a day before September 10th in Hanoi after attending the G20 Leaders Summit hosted by India.
White House Press Secretary Karina Jean Pierre said in a statement, "The leaders of the two countries will explore opportunities to develop Vietnam's economy, expand the ties between the two peoples through educational exchanges and labor development projects, address climate change, and promote peace, prosperity, and stability in the region."
According to reports, Biden and his aides have repeatedly stated that they seek to improve communication between the two governments, cooperate on issues of common interest such as global response to climate change, and avoid unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings.
For many years, the United States has been trying to strengthen its relationship with Vietnam, and Vietnam has been cautious in handling requests from Washington.
The report mentioned that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visited Vietnam earlier this year, and he promised to raise bilateral relations to a new height. Finance Minister Janet Yellen also visited Hanoi in July.
The United States and Vietnam only resumed diplomatic relations in 1995. Since then, bilateral trade has continued to grow, with a commodity trade volume of 138 billion US dollars last year.
