At present, China has built the world's largest and most advanced 5G network. As of the end of April this year, a total of over 2.73 million 5G base stations have been built. The 5G network covers all prefecture level cities, county and urban areas in China. As of the end of April, the number of 5G mobile phone users was 634 million.

Wu Hequan, academician of the CAE Member, said that by April this year, China's 5G base stations accounted for 60% of the world's total, and China's 5G users now accounted for 60% of the world's total.

"China's construction of 5G and fiber optic networks is globally leading," said Wu Hequan. 5G has also made good progress in low-carbon areas. Compared to 4G, the energy consumption of a base station in 5G was four times that in 2019, and the energy efficiency was five times that of 4G.

The co construction and sharing of China's 5G network provides the world with a Chinese solution. China Telecom and China Unicom have teamed up to build the world's largest 5G SA co built and shared boutique network.

China Tower Chairman Zhang Zhiyong introduced that in the past 9 years, the sharing rate of new station sites has increased from the initial 14% to 83%, not only injecting acceleration into 5G new infrastructure, but also achieving more efficient and economical deployment of the network.

Gan Bin, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei Wireless Network Product Line, stated that China's 5G gigabit network has achieved fruitful results. Empowering 60 major categories of national economy

After four years of commercial use, 5G has empowered various industries to undergo digital transformation, bringing new momentum to the digital upgrading of industries. As of now, 5G has been widely applied in more than 16000 private network projects in industries such as steel, manufacturing, mining, power, and ports. The economic scale of 5G industry private networks has exceeded 10 billion yuan.

In complex and dangerous underground mine operation scenarios, Huawei's 5G smart mining solution applies low-frequency and large bandwidth resources to over 100 cameras for uplink transmission, and AI technology is used to achieve panoramic video splicing of the mining face. The underground operation can be fully and clearly seen on the well.

In the past four years of commercial use, China Mobile's 5G commercial cases have grown rapidly. As of now, China Mobile has landed over 410 5G smart mines and nearly 3000 5G smart factory projects, and has signed more than 480 cooperation projects with power grid enterprises.

The exhibition area of China Unicom focuses on the industrial Internet, demonstrating the intelligent scene application of various important links such as factory R&D design, production and manufacturing, quality inspection, warehousing and logistics, fault operation and maintenance, and safety management.

The 5G surgical robot displayed by China Telecom has achieved dozens of remote domestic robot surgeries based on 5G slicing private network support in dozens of hospitals, including Zhejiang University Run Run Shaw Hospital, Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Shanghai Chest Hospital, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Gansu Provincial People's Hospital and other hospitals in Xinjiang, Xizang, Gansu, Inner Mongolia and other regions. It relies on China Telecom's 5G customized network, which meets the technical requirements of millisecond level transmission of operation instructions and language, ensuring precise and safe inspection and surgery.

According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 5G integrated applications have been integrated into 60 out of 97 national economic categories, an increase of 8 industries compared to 52 last year, and the number of application cases exceeds 50000.

The construction of 5G networks has driven industrial development. The customized products of 5G networks are constantly maturing, and the lightweight core network, customized base stations, and other network equipment are accelerating their implementation. The technological capabilities of large bandwidth and low latency are constantly enhancing. 5G terminal products are becoming increasingly abundant. As of the end of March this year, there have been over 1160 5G terminal products such as 5G smartphones, wireless routers, and car terminals.

Dai Xiaohui, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the China Communications Standardization Association, stated that the key to fully leveraging 5G gigabit network technology capabilities lies in three aspects: firstly, continuously deepening network technology innovation and promoting the development of 5G scale applications; Secondly, we will adhere to cross-border cooperation and jointly improve the standard system for 5G integrated applications; The third is to implement policies based on different industries, promoting the first to achieve scale replication in mature application scenarios.

"Killer level" applications haven't appeared yet?

At this year's communication exhibition, 5G new calls, naked eye 3D, 5G surgical robots, holographic interaction, VR/AR... 5G has entered people's daily lives.

The naked eye 3D and holographic interaction in Huawei's exhibition area attracted consumers to stop. Huawei believes that the low latency and large bandwidth of 5G have spawned many new businesses, such as new calls, new videos, and naked eye 3D, driving continuous upgrades in consumer experience.

Sun Xuejun, Deputy General Manager of Zhenxiang Technology, introduced that with the support of 5G gigabit networks, naked eye 3D applications will be able to break through the boundaries of virtual reality and help create richer and more realistic interconnected scenes of all things. On naked eye 3D mobile terminals, it can provide scene applications such as 3D holographic communication, 3D remote education, 3D e-commerce, intelligent assistants, virtual singer live streaming, 3D cultural collections, 3D games, etc.

However, it is also recognized by the industry that 5G has not yet seen "killer" applications and has not seen explosive growth like the mobile Internet.

Wu Hequan said that in the past year, the average monthly mobile Internet traffic of each user in China has increased by 10%, but the ARPU of operators has only increased by less than 1%. This indicates that the commercial application of 5G has not brought about an improvement in experience, and without "killer" applications, it cannot bring about the 5G consumer market.

Wu Hequan believes that currently, it is not an excess of 5G capabilities, but a lack of 5G capabilities. For example, the maturity and price of AR/VR products have not yet reached people's imagination, the reliability of intelligent vehicle networking, and some policy and regulatory limitations have led to the failure to launch these two consumer applications. But another reason is that for these two products, the 5G capabilities are insufficient, with insufficient bandwidth and low latency.

For industrial Internet, the 5G capability also needs to be improved. At the beginning of the 5G layout, although it was also proposed to be oriented towards industrial applications, the architecture of 5G was basically dominated by the concept of consumer applications. Currently, industrial applications require large uplink bandwidth, deterministic latency, high reliability, and precise positioning, which 5G still cannot achieve.

In fact, as early as the 3G and 4G era, networks were also the first, and it was not until a few years later that "killer" applications emerged. Wu Hequan believes that in order to solve application problems, it is necessary to upgrade 5G to 5G-A. Mobile communication is now entering the 5G-A cycle. 5G has a good cooperation with IPv6, industrial Internet and optical communication. In the future, 5G will have good integration and innovation with satellite Internet, artificial intelligence and other technologies.
