The Zhangbei Flexible DC Power Grid Project is a network that can transport various forms of energy such as large-scale wind energy, solar energy, pumped storage, etc. It theoretically breaks through the limitations of the strength of the AC power grid, the distance of new energy convergence, and other factors on the integration of new energy into the grid. Through it, the "infinite scenery" of Zhangbei smoothly entered Beijing.

There is a pumped storage power station in this power grid, with water as the medium and lifting room. Electric energy and potential energy are converted into each other, which not only consumes the surplus wind and solar green electricity transmitted in Zhangbei area, but also maintains the safe operation of the power grid, like a huge "power bank". CCTV reporter Wang Chen: This is the Zhangbei Flexible DC Power Grid Project of the State Grid located in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. Through this complex network, 14 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity can be transmitted to the Beijing area every year, equivalent to one tenth of Beijing's annual electricity consumption. It can be said that one out of every ten lamps in Beijing is lit by the clean energy here.

What everyone is seeing now is only the lower reservoir. There is a similarly sized upper reservoir on a mountain over 500 meters high. How did the "brothers" achieve the function of a power bank? The secret is right under my feet.

This is the underground power plant, which is the core part of the entire pumped storage power station. Inside the large hood behind me is a reversible water pump turbine, which is a pumped storage power generation unit. Unlike ordinary generators, this unit is reversible and can generate electricity by discharging water or pumping water for storage. In this 400 meter long underground factory building, a total of 12 such generator sets are installed.
Liu Jindong, Deputy Director of Maintenance Department of State Grid Xinyuan Hebei Fengning Pumped Storage Co., Ltd.: The two ends of the unit are connected to two reservoirs, one above and one below, through pipelines. In simple terms, when there is abundant power generation, the pumped storage power station uses excess electricity to pump water from low to high places, convert electrical energy into potential energy of water, and then convert the potential energy of water into electrical energy through power generation during peak electricity consumption, and transmit it back to the grid for everyone to use. This charging and discharging allows new energy to be stored and used.

Continuous and stable power generation of Fengning pumped storage power station
It is understood that on July 4th, the first variable speed unit in China was lifted at the Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station. As of now, 11 out of 12 units in the power station have been lifted. Next year, all 12 generator units of the power station will be put into operation.

In addition, according to statistics, since the first batch of units of Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station were put into operation, the station has generated a total of 2.978 billion kilowatt hours of electricity and consumed 3.74 billion kilowatt hours of new energy. Since 2023 alone, the power generation has reached 1.8 billion kilowatt hours.
