US media: Rampant abuse of immigrants by US border patrol personnel, long-term violation of human rights. US | immigrants | personnel
On August 4th, according to a report released by two non-profit organizations on August 2nd, US border patrol personnel have been abusing immigrants and engaging in long-term human rights violations. The largest law enforcement agency in the United States, the Customs and Border Protection Agency, has systemic issues.
This report, written by the Latin American Office in Washington and the Keno Border Initiative, mentions that the United States Customs and Border Protection has been plagued by human rights violations without accountability. Data shows that since 2022, the agency has been involved in over 400 incidents of immigrant abuse, including physical violence, detention of immigrant food and medicine, and racial discrimination enforcement. In addition, the data also shows that nearly 20% of immigrants entering the United States have experienced some form of abuse, and this number may be underestimated, as most abuse cases have not been reported.
The report lists over 40 suggestions for improving the United States Customs and Border Protection and stopping human rights violations at the border, including conducting investigations, punishing those who commit abuse, changing institutional culture to prevent abuse, etc. "Relevant agencies must hold accountable US government personnel who violate human rights or professional standards within a reasonable time, and victims should receive justice."
