Unprecedented: Leaders of the Three Major US Services: Military | Services
According to Kyodo News, on August 14th, due to a Republican senator obstructing hundreds of military promotions, the head of the US Navy retired without a formal successor, resulting in the first time that the three major branches of the US military did not have officially appointed leaders at the same time.
At the resignation ceremony of General Michael Gilday at the United States Naval Academy in Maryland, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed regret over this situation. He said, "This is unprecedented. It is unnecessary and unsafe."
Austin said, "This will affect the lives of many American military families. Our military should not encounter this situation. Our military families should not encounter this situation. Our allies and partners should not encounter this situation. Our national security should not encounter this situation."

According to reports, Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville has now blocked official appointments to multiple leadership positions in the Navy, Army, and Marine Corps.
According to reports, if the appointment is approved, General Lisa Franketti will officially replace Gilday as the first woman to serve as the head of the Navy's military. Franketti was nominated by US President Biden last month to serve as Secretary of Naval Operations. She will lead the Navy as Acting Chief of Naval Operations until her promotion is officially approved by the Senate.
According to reports, Tuberville has blocked over 300 military promotions in protest of a new policy by the Ministry of Defense. This policy allows for the payment of travel expenses for military personnel who wish to have an abortion.
