On both sides of the winding trail, there are scattered green plants, elderly people playing table tennis, and children playing football... Walking into the Xihe Community Sports Corner in Pidu District, Chengdu, there are various forms of fitness equipment, plastic tracks, basketball courts, and other sports facilities available. People of all ages can enjoy the convenience and fun of sports and leisure here.
"We conducted a questionnaire survey and combined it with the actual situation in the community to transform the cement road around the football field into a plastic runway, and set up a table tennis area, an elderly activity area, and a micro space for children's sports and play using the idle space in the middle of the venue." Huang Yangshun, Deputy Secretary of the Xihe Community Party Committee, told reporters.
The open sports space ignites the enthusiasm of residents for sports. In recent years, Xihe Community has successfully held a series of football competitions such as the "Neighborhood Cup", "Rail Cup", and "Football Carnival". In combination with the "Love Chengdu, Welcome the Universiade" series of activities, they have organized fun sports events, community sports festivals, Xihe Football Junior Public Welfare Training Courses, etc., which have received unanimous praise from surrounding residents.
Similarly, in the Sanguan Community of Pidu District, in order to provide citizens with diverse fitness experiences, the community has built a sports complex using the idle space of the Party and Mass Service Center, and set up sports venues such as an 8-person football field, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, badminton courts, indoor table tennis courts, sports and health equipment, and all-weather plastic runways. The sports field has truly been built at the "doorstep" of citizens, bringing them a richer sports experience and further stimulating their enthusiasm for sports.
How to fully tap into the potential of existing space, achieve the regeneration and utilization of remaining urban space, and enable "small" space to play a "large" role? In 2021, Chengdu issued a document planning to complete the construction of 600 remaining spaces in batches over a period of 3 years, transforming the "leftover materials" in the city into "golden corners and silver edges" in an orderly and standardized manner.
Taking the opportunity of hosting the Universiade, Chengdu has formulated and released the country's first "Guidelines for Setting up Sports Spaces at Home", utilizing urban idle land, "golden corners and silver edges" and other diversified and convenient sports spaces to create a "one community, one brand" sports life scene. It has created 212 community sports corner demonstration projects, more than 400 new fitness spaces on Tianfu Greenway, and 111 community level intelligent fitness facility demonstration projects, allowing citizens to enjoy more convenient sports spaces. At present, Chengdu has successively cultivated national fitness brands with urban characteristics, such as "Tianfu Greenway Health Walk" and "Community Sports Festival".
"Pidu District fully utilizes idle land, marginal land, and zero starry sky, and implements small amusement parks and micro green spaces at 7 locations in the district through methods such as leaving blank spaces to increase greenery and inserting greenery into gaps. This empowers urban idle space with sports, creates a close range sports life circle for citizens, and allows them to experience life and happiness in green sports scenes." The relevant person in charge of Pidu District stated that currently, the population of 1.3984 million in the district has 3.65594 million square meters of sports field area, and the per capita sports field area has reached 2.61 square meters. In addition to the ongoing construction of science and technology innovation sports innovation parks, the per capita sports field area in Pidu District will continue to grow.
