United Nations warning! The world has seriously deviated from this goal | Sustainable development | United Nations
UN Secretary General Guterres warned on July 17th that the world has "seriously deviated" from the track of achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and he called on countries to "make progress in 2023" and strengthen their actions now.
At the opening ceremony of the ministerial meeting of the United Nations High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Guterres said that "progress on more than half of the sustainable development goals is currently weak... nearly one-third of the goals are stagnant or regressing.".
Guterres said that greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, huge inequality still exists, and hunger has returned to 2005 levels. Based on current progress, nearly 600 million people will still live in extreme poverty by 2030. He pointed out that the COVID-19 epidemic, the increasingly serious climate crisis and the widespread conflict have seriously hindered the fragile and limited progress.
He warned that the current funding gap for the Sustainable Development Goals has increased from $2.5 trillion before the pandemic to approximately $4.2 trillion.
Guterres urges the international community to immediately coordinate action. He called on all countries to present clear plans and commitments at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals summit in September to strengthen their actions before 2030.
Guterres emphasized that developed countries should fulfill their commitments in climate financing, including delivering the promised $100 billion funding this year.
Guterres stated that "there is still time for change" and called on all countries to cherish time and keep their promises.
