On July 1st, UN Coordinator in China, Chang Qide, gave a speech at the 11th World Peace Forum's "Climate and Multilateralism" Cooperation Group Discussion, affirming China's positive role in addressing global climate change.
Chang Qide stated that China is an important global actor and has played a crucial role in addressing climate change. Its efforts in sustainable development, the utilization of renewable energy, and emission reduction are commendable. China's commitment to peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 demonstrates its determination to take action on climate change.
Chang Qide also gave an example that he recently visited the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia with the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina, to see the achievements of local afforestation work. "It has changed people's lives, brought profound environmental and socio-economic benefits, and significantly changed the ecosystem. These projects have created much-needed employment opportunities for the local area, ensured food security, and lifted the area out of poverty."
Chang Qide finally stated that only through multilateral cooperation can the world effectively respond to the climate crisis and ensure a sustainable future for future generations. The United Nations is closely cooperating with China, focusing on the green sector, establishing partnerships with multilateral institutions, and expanding the impact of sustainable development.
