On June 7th, the Ukrainian State News Agency reported that Yulia Svydenko, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, stated that the cost of building a new hydroelectric power plant is about $1 billion, which not only involves installing new hydroelectric power units but also restoring the integrity of a dam. She stated that the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam will have serious environmental and economic consequences, posing a huge threat to food security. It will take at least 5 years to repair the dam alone, and the cumulative humanitarian and environmental consequences of the accident will continue to grow.
The attacked Kakhovka hydroelectric dam
According to preliminary estimates from the Ukrainian Ministry of Environment and the Ukrainian Environmental Protection Agency, this incident has caused water resource losses of approximately 2 billion hryvnas, which will increase in the future. At present, the Ukrainian government has allocated 120 million hryvnas to provide drinking water for the residents of Nikolayev Oblast. In addition, the Ukrainian government has allocated 1.5 billion hryvnas for the construction of new water pipes.
