Ukrainian Foreign Minister: Ukraine is already a member of NATO psychologically. Summit | NATO | Ukraine
According to the report of Deutsche Presse-Agentur on July 14, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba expressed satisfaction with the results of the NATO Vilnius Summit, and said that Ukraine was already a member of NATO "psychologically".
According to the report, Kuleba said in an interview with Ukrainian television on July 14th, "We have overcome psychological barriers, and I believe Ukraine is actually considered a member state of NATO."
Kuleba said that unfortunately, "significant progress" has not been made. He also said, "But significant progress will eventually come.".
Kuleba stated that everyone assured Kiev during the closed door talks that NATO membership would soon arrive, and the only question was when and how quickly it would arrive.
Kuleba also said that Ukraine and Western countries have discussed the wording of the "security agreement" before its accession to NATO.
He said, "We interpret it as a security guarantee, and they see it as a political commitment in the field of security."
On July 12th, leaders of the G7 attending the NATO summit issued a joint statement stating that the G7 will provide long-term military and financial assistance to Ukraine before Ukraine becomes a NATO member. The statement said, "We will each cooperate with Ukraine to make specific, bilateral, and long-term security commitments and arrangements to ensure that Ukraine has a sustainable armed force to defend its homeland in the coming years and respond to any possible future aggression."
After the announcement of security measures provided by the G7, Ukrainian President Zelensky stated that "the outcome of the summit was good," but being invited to join NATO would be an ideal outcome.
Kremlin spokesperson Peskov said that providing security to Ukraine by the West would be a dangerous mistake, affecting Russia's own security and putting Europe at greater risk for many years to come.
