This article by Russian media has made it clear that the BRICS countries are not subservient reactions to China | Author | Country
Today, on August 6th, an article titled "What the West Doesn't Understand about the BRICS Countries" was published on the website of Russian television. The author is Russian political analyst Temur Fumenko. The article excerpt is as follows:
Western experts have suggested that the BRICS countries may become vassals of China, claiming that other members of the group are fully controlled by Beijing in terms of economic influence and other aspects.
This proposition failed to clarify the BRICS countries and their goals. Accusing China of attempting to force those countries - who still wish to maintain neutrality or good relations with the West - to ally with them is completely pointless. BRICS cooperation is becoming a forum that concerns the development interests of southern countries worldwide. It is not related to ideological or military alliances, but is closely related to the fact that these countries are allowed to gain political space for further development by creating a multipolar environment and circumventing the limitations of Western models.
To understand this, it is necessary to understand that the development of a country is not simple and direct. It is easy to quote the right-wing absurdity that certain countries in the global south should bear full responsibility for their own poverty or chaos. The actual situation is more complex than this. Any enterprise that wants to succeed requires capital and the market. Coincidentally, for the past 400 years, the distribution of global capital and markets has been dominated by the West. These countries gain their own status through violence and exploitation, and then only allow other countries to gain wealth when it benefits them.
This means that countries in the global South cannot develop unless they submit to the political order and rules established by the West. The West has manipulated these rules to keep these established capital and wealth in their original place.
Therefore, the development choices of southern countries around the world have always been hindered by the Western dominated global financial system. However, now the world is undergoing changes. China is rising, which creates political space for the global southern countries to seek their own economic development outside the western dominated foam. Of course, the United States is now responding to this change in global trends by seeking to suppress China's rise and demonstrating what the future will face if any developing country tries to develop according to its own conditions.
In this new geopolitical environment, the strategic significance of BRICS cooperation is increasing day by day, mainly because it represents the cooperation of southern countries around the world in shaping a non Western dominated future economy. It is precisely because the BRICS countries are built on the basis of a non aligned tradition that they are not a "China led camp". Therefore, many countries have applied to join the BRICS Cooperation Mechanism.
