Chengdu, July 18th (Xinhua) - "This venue is so beautiful now! I remember playing basketball here when I was young..." Walking into the Chengbei Sports Center located in Jinniu District, Chengdu, 71 year old Li Yusheng couldn't help but look and touch here, with a smile on his face and his eyes shining.

On July 28th, the 31st Summer Universiade for University Students is about to open in Chengdu, and the Chengbei Sports Center, as the competition venue for martial arts events at the Universiade, may produce the first gold medal of this year's Universiade. The fact that world-class sports events like the Universiade can be held in the sports arena at their doorstep has made Li Yusheng, who has lived nearby for decades, very excited. "I plan to bring my family to watch the game and witness the shining moment at my doorstep," said Li Yusheng, whose home is just a street away from the North City Sports Center. He witnessed the "rebirth" of this 40 year old building himself.

During the preparation period for the Chengdu Universiade, the city of Chengdu upgraded and renovated 36 existing venues. Among these venues, the Chengbei Sports Center is very unique. It used to be the earliest comprehensive sports center built in Chengdu, carrying the "sports memories" of several generations of old Chengdu people. However, due to the changes of the times, it declined for a while, and the Universiade revitalized this old sports center.
The Chengbei Sports Center, founded in 1973, was originally an open-air light court and was not renovated into a sports center until 1980. Many people from old Chengdu have played basketball here. "At that time, my family lived nearby, and many friends made plans to go to the Chengbei Sports Center to play ball after work every day. Playing ball here was a fashionable activity for many young people in Chengdu at that time." Li Yusheng recalled that the Chengbei Sports Center was stylish and bright, and there was a constant stream of people coming to play and take walks.

At that time, the Chengbei Sports Center also hosted various performances and competitions. Hu Yanfang, a resident who has lived nearby for decades, told me

Many competitions and activities were held at the Chengbei Sports Center back then
However, with the changing times, the once dazzling Chengbei Sports Center once declined. In the 1990s, with the rise of the market economy, the Chengbei Sports Center was transformed into an electrical appliance market. The basketball stands were dismantled, and the seats in the stands were also moved away. Two floors were built on the open basketball court, separated by small shops selling various electrical appliances. People who come and go here are no longer immersed in the joy of sports, but busy with buying and selling. The Chengbei Sports Center is gradually fading out of people's sight and only exists in the chat memories of some old Chengdu people after tea and dinner.
Seeing the disappearance of the Chengbei Sports Center, which had been with him for many years, Li Yusheng and his old neighbors felt very lonely in their hearts. They often come for walks nearby, reminiscing about the time of exercising and sweating.
The Chengbei Sports Center once became an electrical shopping mall

With the continuous improvement of economic and social levels, Chengdu's emphasis on urban sports development is increasing. In the process of actively building a "world-renowned city for sports events", Chengdu also pays attention to creating an overall sports atmosphere in the city, and sports parks, community sports corners, greenway fitness new spaces, etc. have been fully expanded. At present, the per capita sports venue area in Chengdu exceeds 2.4 square meters.
The Chengbei Sports Center has also been upgraded. In July 2014, the Chengbei Sports Center gradually resumed its sports functions; In 2016, all the electrical appliance vendors inside the Chengbei Sports Center moved out, and the sports center returned.
During the preparation process for the Chengdu Universiade, the Chengbei Sports Center underwent comprehensive upgrades and renovations in accordance with international A-level standards. The upgrade of a sports center that has been in operation for over 40 years also reflects the transformation of the "hard" foundation and "soft" environment of urban sports in Chengdu.
In the Jinniu district where the Chengbei Sports Center is located, in the New Jinniu Park, Tianfu Art Park, and even in the "Ba Ba" square on the street, many elderly people and children can often be seen sweating while exercising. The profound sports soil and strong sports atmosphere make the city full of vitality.

In April of this year, the Chengdu Sports Bureau released a survey data on sports consumption among residents in Chengdu, showing that in 2022, the total scale of sports consumption in Chengdu reached 57.86 billion yuan, an increase of 8.4% compared to the same period in 2021; The per capita sports consumption expenditure of residents is 2720.6 yuan, an increase of 8.0% compared to the same period in 2021; The per capita sports consumption expenditure of residents accounts for 9.4% of the per capita consumption expenditure of residents.
Now, the upgraded Chengbei Sports Center is completely new. The entire gymnasium has a construction area of approximately 20000 square meters and is equipped with competition, warm-up, and training venues. The appearance has been changed to a "flying saucer" shape, paired with an orange red exterior, resembling a phoenix spreading its wings and soaring high, like a "phoenix nirvana". During the Universiade, it will emit dazzling light to the world.

The footsteps of the Chengdu Universiade are gradually approaching, and Liu Linglin is responsible for closely inspecting the preparation of the event inside the venue, walking at least 20000 steps per day on average. Watching the changes at the North City Sports Center, Liu Linglin, who was capable and straightforward, couldn't conceal her excitement. She is both a veteran employee of the Chengbei Sports Center and now an assistant in the martial arts competition at the Chengdu Universiade. "The Chengbei Sports Center is like an old friend of ours. We are also pleased to see that our old friend has regained vitality."
Now, Liu Linglin meticulously carries out the final sprint of preparation with her colleagues every day. "Every day is a myriad of small things, and it is our responsibility as Chengdu sports people to do them well and make every effort to prepare for the Universiade."
The old mansion is rejuvenated. An old venue with a history of over 40 years has now become a new landmark of the city. After the Chengdu Universiade, the Chengbei Sports Center will be opened to the public, which will inevitably lead a new wave of sports in the city.
