The Malabar exercise began in 1992 and was originally a bilateral exercise between the United States and India. It was named after the location of the exercise on the Malabar beach in India. In 2007, Japan joined this exercise as a trilateral exercise, alternating between the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific Ocean. In 2020, Australia joined the joint military exercise. This year is the first time Australia has hosted this military exercise. Australian Defense Minister Richard Mars said, "Australia is honored to hold its first large-scale naval exercise, and in the current strategic environment, it is more important than ever for us to work with neighboring countries and deepen our defense partnership.".
It is reported that the subjects of this joint military exercise include maritime rescue, anti submarine warfare, air defense and missile defense, and the four countries have dispatched destroyers, anti submarine patrol planes, and helicopters.
