The United States bears a significant responsibility!, This coup
According to the report of Latin American News Agency on August 26, Juan Gabriel Valdez, Chile's ambassador to the United States, said on August 26 that the recently declassified documents showed that the United States was responsible for the 1973 coup against Salvador Allende's government.
"From these documents, it is clear that the United States bears a very significant responsibility for gradually undermining our system, weakening democratic beliefs, and promoting violent activities to end the democratic process," Baldes told CNN Chile
After the two reports on September 8 and 11, 1973, written by the Central Intelligence Agency and sent to President Richard Nixon, were made public, the diplomat made comments on television.
Valdes added that these two documents have created a very sad situation and a period of history between the two countries, characterized by the long-term intervention of the United States in Chilean politics during the reigns of Eduardo Frey Montalva and Allende.
This week, an unknown recording by former Chilean Foreign Minister Orlando Letrell was also released in Chile, confirming that Allende planned to convene a referendum on September 11, 1973 to prevent the ongoing coup.
These documents were released on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the coup led by Augusto Pinochet, which opened one of the darkest chapters in Chilean history. It is estimated that over 40000 people were persecuted and killed during Pinochet's 17 years in power.
According to a report on the website of the Spanish newspaper El Pais on August 26, the US State Department released two documents on the 25th, namely the daily reports received by President Nixon on September 8 and 11, 1973, which analyzed the dynamics before the coup in Chile, which overthrew the government of Socialist President Allende. The decrypted documents show Washington's view on the situation in San Diego on the eve of the anti democratic coup, which paved the way for Pinochet's dictatorship.
These two historically significant reports were released by the US Ambassador to Chile, Bernadette Mihan, and are accompanied by an official statement from the Joe Biden administration, emphasizing that the disclosure of these reports "demonstrates our long-term commitment to the partnership between the United States and Chile, which is closely linked to our efforts to promote democracy and human rights in various countries and around the world.".
