According to the Russian Sputnik News Agency on August 12, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia believed that there could be no winner in a nuclear war, and such a war should not be launched, but at the same time, Russia was taking all necessary measures to safeguard national security and sovereignty.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that in the context of the deteriorating international situation, there has been active discussion among the public about the practical significance of the strategic nuclear force non targeting decision implemented by Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States since the 1990s. Some have called on Russia to abolish its participation in the agreement, "activate the nuclear threat mechanism," and target Russian missiles at the United States and the United Kingdom.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on relevant discussions, stating: "Ensuring the containment of potential enemies and preventing them from invading Russia and its allies is the highest priority of the country. At the same time, the Russian leadership firmly adheres to the principle that nuclear war cannot be fought. Our starting point is that there is no winner in nuclear war, and such a war should not be launched."
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also pointed out that Russia is taking necessary measures to ensure national security, territorial integrity, and sovereignty, and will continue to do so.
