In response to recent announcements from multiple universities stating that WeChat Pay will be discontinued from July 1st due to a handling fee of 0.6%, WeChat Pay responded on June 29th to China News Service that WeChat Pay will continue to maintain a zero rate preferential policy for non-profit payment scenarios on campus, and plans to only provide services for a small number of profitable scenarios such as e-commerce and tourism at preferential rates lower than the market average.
Recently, several universities, including Northwestern University, Nanjing University of Technology, and Zhoukou Normal University, have announced that Tencent's WeChat Pay will implement refined management of campus scene users starting from July 1st. In addition to tuition fees, other fees will be restricted and a handling fee of 0.6% will be charged. Starting from June 30th, the school will suspend the provision of WeChat QR code scanning payment services for campus one card users.
In response to this, WeChat Pay stated that since 2015, it has been entering the campus and providing long-term zero rate preferential policies for non-profit payment scenarios on campus, and continuously investing in bank channel fees and other costs. We will continue to maintain a zero rate preferential policy for the above scenarios.
WeChat Pay has stated that it has recently launched a communication with merchants to refine the management of rates in the campus industry. After collecting opinions and feedback in the early stage, it plans to only provide services for a small number of profitable scenarios such as e-commerce and liquor and tourism at preferential rates lower than the market average.
