According to a report by Efi, the Ecuadorian Security Council declared a 60 day state of emergency and imposed a curfew in the provinces of Manavi, Los Rios, and Duran on July 24th. The day before, the mayor of Manta, Agustin Entriago, was assassinated.
According to reports, Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso announced this measure at a security committee meeting held in Duran. Duran City is one of the cities in Ecuador with the highest incidence of violence and insecurity.
The declared state of emergency due to an increase in crime and violence covers the province of Manawi, where Manta City is located, as well as the adjacent province of Los Rios, which also borders the province of Guayas, where Duran City is located.
In these two provinces and one city, a curfew will be implemented from 10pm local time to 5am the next day.
According to reports, since Lasso took office as president in May 2021, Ecuador has repeatedly declared a state of emergency measures to quell the wave of violence caused by the country's security crisis.
According to reports, Entriago is one of the most popular mayors in Ecuador, and his assassination has shaken the country and plunged the election campaign into a sad atmosphere. Several candidates have suspended their campaign activities as a sign of mourning.
38 year old Entriago was re elected as the mayor of Manta City in February this year. On July 23rd, Entriago was shot dead while inspecting an engineering project.
According to reports, so far, the police have arrested one person involved in the case. This person is Venezuelan and has been hospitalized for treatment due to injuries sustained during the attack. The police also found four mobile phones involved in the case, as well as some physical evidence at the scene of the shooting in Triago.
