The passenger felt embarrassed after disembarking, and an Indian plane made an emergency landing in Russia
According to the Moscow Times website on June 7th, an Air India flight from New Delhi to San Francisco was forced to make an emergency landing in the Russian Far East city of Magadan on June 6th due to engine failure. However, the passengers on the plane - most likely Indian and American citizens - found themselves stranded in a remote town after stepping out of the plane, unable to pay for food or other goods due to Western sanctions against Russia.
According to reports, due to a shortage of local hotel rooms in Magadan, most of the 216 passengers and 16 crew members on this Boeing 777 were accommodated in temporary accommodations at a school in the nearby town of Sokol. Magadan is the local state capital with approximately 90000 residents.
16-year-old passenger Gilvan Kam told Al Jazeera reporters that he and his family were likely prohibited from leaving the hotel due to concerns from Russian immigration officials.
Kam also said that they could not buy additional food in the temporary residence because Russia was cut off from the international payment system due to the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Air India announced on the 7th that a replacement plane carrying essential items and food for passengers has departed from Mumbai and plans to transport passengers from Magadan to San Francisco on the 8th.
US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said on the 6th that the US government is "aware" of the incident and is closely monitoring the development of the situation. However, Patel said he cannot confirm how many US passport holders are stranded in Magadan.
The emergency landing of an American made aircraft has also raised questions about how quickly it can be repaired in Russia, according to reports. The sanctions imposed by the West on the Russian aviation industry have cut off the supply of many aircraft components.
