The Pakistan Election Commission has ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan: No bail allowed for Pakistan's Justice Movement Party | Imran Khan | Prime Minister
According to the website of Pakistan Today on the 11th, the Pakistan Election Commission has issued an arrest warrant on bail for former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Pakistan Justice Movement Party, Imran Khan, for contempt of court.
According to reports, other arrested individuals also include former Minister of Information Fawad Chowdhury. Since the dismissal of the PTI government in April 2022, the PTI leadership, especially Imran Khan, has been criticizing ECP and election commissioner Raja for their "partisan" behavior, stating that Raja has a "bias" against the PTI and has repeatedly demanded Raja's resignation. After being targeted by multiple speeches by Imran Khan, ECP issued a notice to Imran Khan and three others in August last year, demanding that they take responsibility for "inappropriate remarks.".
At the hearing held on the 11th, Imran Khan, Chowdhury, and former PTI Secretary General Assad Omar were absent from the hearing despite receiving a subpoena from the ECP. The failure of the three individuals to appear in court prompted ECP to take further action, and as a result, ECP issued non bail arrest warrants against Imran Khan and Chowdhury.
On the 4th of this month, Pakistani media reported that Imran Khan has informed the PTI leadership of his possible arrest in the next two weeks. Previously, the government had granted the institution investigating Imran Khan additional detention powers. Imran Khan appeared in court or was arrested in 16 cases, but was released on bail in all cases. Pakistani officials claim that Imran Khan and his wife are suspected of multiple corruption and other crimes, but Imran Khan and his assistants deny any improper behavior.
