On June 5th, Tsinghua University established Xiuzhong Academy and set up engineering experimental classes to cultivate global leaders in green development. The first batch of undergraduate students will be admitted this autumn semester. The reporter noticed that in recent years, many universities in Beijing, such as Peking University and Renmin University of China, have explored the academy based training model, and a group of colleges with distinctive disciplinary characteristics have settled in Beijing, becoming the "standard configuration" for undergraduate talent training in universities.
The newly established Xiuzhong Academy at Tsinghua University is named after the lyrics of the school song, which symbolizes the gathering of resources from all parties and the cultivation of outstanding talents committed to harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. It is in line with the academy's training direction - setting up five cross directions: energy and climate change, resource utilization and circulation, ecological environment and health, sustainable cities and facilities, green economy and global governance. It cultivates composite and top-notch innovative talents who have a deep understanding of the relationship between society and nature, can solve the challenges of resources, energy, environment, cities and society faced by global development, and master interdisciplinary knowledge.
Compared to colleges that focus on academic development, academies are more inclined towards student development education, breaking down barriers between professional departments, and promoting collaborative growth between teachers and students. Tsinghua Xiuzhong Academy will implement a full staff mentor system, providing guidance teachers for each student and developing a "one person, one policy" training plan; Establish a team of peers, seniors, and teachers to participate in diverse academic and cultural activities. During their freshman year, students will engage in scientific research, innovation, and exploration work under the guidance of their mentors.
Based on interdisciplinary education, the employment directions of students after graduation are also diverse: students can engage in scientific research and teaching work in research institutes, innovate green technology, and explore new development models of green and low-carbon; Employment in enterprises and promoting the green transformation of traditional industries; Work in government departments, international organizations, etc., promote the formulation and implementation of sustainable development policies, and global green development cooperation.
In recent years, a group of new colleges and universities have emerged intensively. Since 2020, Tsinghua University has established eight academies, namely Zhili, Rixin, Weiyang, Tanwei, Xingjian, Qiuzhen, Weixian, and Xiuzhong, becoming the cradle of the Strong Foundation Plan and Qiu Chengtong's Leading Talents Training Program in Mathematical Science. Peking University has the Luming Academy, which focuses on cultivating innovative talents in life sciences in fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, information, and engineering. Renmin University of China established Mingde Academy and Mingli Academy in 2020. Mingde Academy undertakes the construction of the strong foundation plan for Chinese language and literature, history, and philosophy. Mingli Academy is responsible for teaching and managing the enrollment and training of freshmen in science and engineering disciplines. There are also Chuanyuan Academy of Beihang University, Hongde Academy of Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and Wangqi Academy of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, among others. These academies with distinctive academic characteristics have become the "standard" for undergraduate talent cultivation in universities.
