[Situation backtracking]

In 2023, the Kaitu Everest mountaineering team consisted of 9 members, 1 Chinese leader, and 11 Sherpas.

Among them, Ms. Liu, a member of the first tier team, set off to rush to the summit on the night of May 17th and reached the summit at 10:38 am on May 18th.

Ms. Liu is an old team member of Kaitu Mountain, who has followed Kaitu to climb Mount Mustag and Mount Yuzhu. Due to Ms. Liu's entry and exit time being limited to 20 days, Kaitu Gaoshan has customized a climbing plan for her based on her physical condition and objective situation: to undergo adaptation training at an altitude of 6000 meters in China to replace the adaptation cycle below C1 on the southern slope of Mount Everest, and then fly to the base camp of Mount Everest to connect with the later stage of climbing.

After reaching the southern slope of Mount Everest, Ms. Liu continued to actively adapt and overall adapted well, possessing the conditions to reach the summit. Starting from May 15th, she will wait for the weather window at Camp C2, and Kaitu Gaoshan will arrange for her to depart and rush to the top at 20:00 on May 17th.

On the morning of May 18th at 10:38, Ms. Liu and her Sherpa climbed to the summit of Mount Everest and stopped briefly before starting to retreat. At around dusk, retreat to an altitude of 8400 meters, where you can clearly see the tent of Kaitu C4 campsite. At this point, unclear communication between Ms. Liu and Lakpa, Bianba, and Sherpa caused the two to separate, and Ms. Liu began to act alone.

During Ms. Liu's solo descent, the descent device got stuck on the road rope, and for a while, Ms. Liu couldn't undo it on her own. Waiting for about an hour, it was getting dark and we encountered Xie Ruxiang and Mr. Fan Jiangtao from the Hunan Provincial Mountaineering Team who were preparing to climb the summit, as well as Sherpa, the "8K Expedition" from Nepal. Several mountaineers gave up the opportunity to climb the summit without hesitation, providing assistance to Ms. Liu and helping her safely return to Camp 4.

At 6:30 in the evening, Sherpa, who arrived at C4 first, found that Ms. Liu had not returned to the camp. He immediately climbed the mountain to search for 8500 meters, but did not find any trace of Ms. Liu. That night, Kaitu teamed up multiple times to search the mountains, but there were no results. Until receiving notification from 8K the next day that Ms. Liu had been safely taken back to C4 by Xie Ruxiang and Fan Jiangtao, Kaitu picked up Ms. Liu from the 8K team camp at 7:30 in the morning.

Regarding Responsibility

Kaitu Gaoshan has always emphasized that safe mountaineering is the top priority. At every moment on the mountain, Sherpa should follow the customers around, as accidents can occur at any time in extremely high altitude snow capped mountains.

In this incident, the accidental separation between Ms. Liu and Sherpa was a mistake in our work, and we must take responsibility for this part.

Fortunately, Ms. Liu did not experience any physical injuries or serious consequences such as frostbite. Before the extreme danger occurred, she met Xie Ruxiang, Mr. Fan Jiangtao, and Nepal's "8K Expedition" Sherpa and received timely rescue.

Afterwards, Kaitu immediately launched various communications and investigations, and based on the facts, rewarded and punished the relevant personnel; Of course, punishment is not the purpose, but a warning. Avoid future accidents with today's mistakes.

At this point, we have reached understanding and consensus with the rescuers, the Nepal Sherpa rescue team, and Ms. Liu. The rescue costs and supplies incurred this time should be borne by Kaitu Gaoshan; At present, rescue supplies have been returned and relevant funds have been paid; Other matters have been coordinated and resolved.
