On the 13th, the news that "McDonald's relabeled expired ingredients to extend their life" sparked heated discussions among netizens.
At 10:10 a.m. on the 13th, Sino-Singapore Jingwei called the market supervision departments of the McDonald's Zhengzhou Excellent Agricultural Federation Restaurant and McDonald's Jinan University Restaurant respectively. The relevant staff stated that they "have gone to the stores involved to investigate and collect evidence."
"If it's quick, the results will be available before noon, and the latest before get off work today." A staff member from the Market Supervision and Administration Bureau of Zhengdong New District, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province told Sino-Singapore Jingwei.
At 9:20 a.m. on the 13th, Sino-Singapore Jingwei called the two stores involved and they were both operating normally. Among them, staff at the McDonald's Jinan University restaurant said they had not noticed the relevant news and had not received relevant notifications from McDonald's China headquarters; staff at the McDonald's Zhengzhou Excellent Agricultural Federation restaurant also said they were "not sure" about the matter.
According to the Beijing News, reporters recently went undercover at McDonald's Zhengzhou Excellent Agricultural Federation Restaurant and McDonald's Jinan University Restaurant and found that both restaurants had problems such as tampering with food shelf life labels, using expired ingredients, selling food after its shelf life, and cutting corners. McDonald's Zhengzhou Excellent Agricultural Federation restaurant also has fried oil quality that exceeds the standard.
In response to the above-mentioned behavior in McDonald's stores, netizens commented a lot: "It's right next to the work. Almost everyone in the office has eaten at this store. Who knows..." "I have always believed in their hygiene" and "McDonald's, you stabbed me in the back."
This is not the first time that McDonald's has had issues with expired ingredients being relabeled and continued to be used and sold. According to public information, as early as 2012, CCTV's "March 15" party named McDonald's Beijing Sanlitun restaurant for illegal practices such as refurbishing and reselling expired food; in October 2021, a McDonald's restaurant in Hefei, Anhui was also exposed for lettuce poisoning. There are still problems such as using and replacing expired food labels; in March 2022, there were also media reports that a McDonald's store in Nanjing changed the expired meat labels before using them again.
McDonald's entered the Chinese market in 1990 and by the end of 2023, it had more than 5,500 stores in China. China is currently McDonald's second largest market in the world. According to McDonald's official disclosure: McDonald's China is moving towards the goal of exceeding 10,000 restaurants in 2028.
