The high temperature weather poses significant challenges to China's power system. The reporter learned from Southern Power Grid today that the electricity load in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan, the five southern provinces and regions, has reached a historic high.
CCTV reporter Pingfan: The Southern Power Grid Dispatching Center is responsible for the power dispatching of the five southern provinces and regions, and the total load accounts for nearly 1/5 of the country. At 5:12 this afternoon, the unified load of the whole network was close to 0.226 billion kilowatts, a record high.

According to preliminary statistics from Southern Power Grid, from January to June this year, the total social electricity consumption in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan provinces and regions was 722.5 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 5.2%. Looking at different provinces and regions, Hainan has led the growth rate of electricity consumption in five provinces and regions, while Guangdong and Guangxi have achieved stable growth in electricity consumption.
In Hebei, under continuous high temperatures from July 7th to 9th, the cooling load of the power grid continued to increase to 16 million kilowatts, reaching the maximum cooling load level last year. The refrigeration load accounts for 35.7% of the total electricity consumption on that day.
According to the China Electricity Council, from the perspective of power supply, China's newly installed power generation is mainly based on new energy, and the growth of effective power generation capacity is lower than the growth of electricity demand.

The installed capacity of new energy is growing rapidly, but the randomness and volatility of new energy generation have increased the difficulty of ensuring power supply. Faced with challenges, coal-fired power units in multiple regions are accelerating their upgrading and transformation, complementing wind and photovoltaic power, and increasing their supply guarantee capacity during peak hours.

This project is a key project of the North Passage of the West East Power Transmission, and its biggest feature is the ability to deeply adjust peak load.
Zhao Guoping, Deputy Director of Inner Mongolia Dalate Power Plant: The minimum load of the project's peak shaving capacity can be reduced from 100% to 25%, which is to support the complementary use of new energy and wind power. When the wind and solar power generation is relatively small, thermal power is used for peak shaving.
In order to meet the needs of new energy development, Inner Mongolia has introduced policies to encourage coal-fired power enterprises to undergo flexible transformation. By 2025, complete the energy-saving transformation of coal-fired power units by 20 million kilowatts.

According to statistics from China Electric Power Union, after the energy-saving and efficiency improvement renovation of coal-fired power units, the unit can save an average of about 4 to 10 grams of standard coal per kilowatt hour, and the average peak shaving capacity of flexibility renovation projects can increase by more than 10%.
Experts say that the renovation of coal-fired power units requires investment in renovation costs, and flexible scheduling objectively reduces power generation revenue and increases operating costs. The price and market mechanisms that are suitable for the renovation still need to be improved.

Promoting new energy-saving and emission reduction technologies in the steel and petrochemical industry

Recently, carbon capture, storage, and utilization technologies are rapidly being promoted in key carbon emitting industries such as steel and petrochemicals. Separate carbon dioxide from industry, energy, or the atmosphere, and directly utilize or inject it into geological formations to achieve permanent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

This calcium magnesium carbonate will ultimately be applied in the production of biodegradable plastic bags and PVC pipes. At present, this project is also the world's first comprehensive utilization demonstration project for carbon dioxide and steel slag.

Yu Wenjian, General Manager of Inner Mongolia Baoqian Environmental Protection New Materials Co., Ltd.: The main reactor can process 12.5 tons of steel slag per hour. Through its chemical reaction, one ton of steel slag can reduce carbon emissions by 1.25 tons overall.
This carbon capture, utilization, and storage demonstration project utilizes the reaction between carbon dioxide and steel slag at room temperature to produce the first batch of milky white calcium carbonate products. Currently, the annual production capacity for processing steel slag has reached 100000 tons.
According to calculations, the country adds nearly 90 million tons of steel slag annually. If this carbon dioxide mineralization technology is used, the total life cycle calculation can directly and indirectly reduce emissions by more than 110 million tons.

In the petrochemical field, the carbon dioxide transportation pipeline from Qilu Petrochemical to Shengli Oilfield's carbon capture, utilization, and storage project was officially put into operation on July 11th. The pipeline is 109 kilometers long and can transport 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide captured by Qilu Petrochemical's production to the underground oil reservoir of Shengli Oilfield for oil displacement and storage every year. It can extract the difficult to collect oil resources underground. This is also the first million ton carbon capture, utilization, and storage project in China.
