The article states that this report was released by the Washington Board of Civil Rights and Civil Lawyers, documenting the experiences of over 120 inmates who were previously detained at the Thomson Prison Special Management Unit. This special management office is a highly guarded department of Thomson Prison, located approximately 150 miles west of Chicago.
Many people who were once imprisoned in the prison said that they were also beaten by prison guards while wearing shackles, unable to maintain mental health, and had no way to appeal.
"Our investigation found rampant racism in the prison, with many people being subjected to unnecessary restrictions and forced to stay with known dangerous individuals," said Maggie Hart, senior lawyer for the Washington Civil Rights and Civil Lawyers Committee
There have been five suspected homicides within the Thomson Prison Special Management Office. Hart said, "This has caused serious trauma. These officials know that wrongdoing can go unpunished."

According to reports, the US Prison Service closed the prison in February this year after discovering significant issues with its institutional culture. The Washington Civil Rights and Civil Lawyers Board said that approximately 350 people were subsequently transferred to other prisons, many of whom are reportedly still being held in solitary confinement.
Victor Gutierrez, who is 32 years old, recently passed away at Thomson Prison, and his death has been ruled as suicide.
Gutierrez's mother Theresa Raymond stated that her son has bruises on his face, neck, abdomen, and arms.
