The inheritors of intangible cultural heritage born in 1995 have brought out the trend of ancient noodle sculpture in Africa | Noodle Man | Out of the Circle
"Three quarters of the flour and one quarter of the rice noodles are mixed, boiled, steamed, mixed with color and honey, kneaded, and the dough can last for ten or twenty years." Bing Xin, the writer, in his Interview with the "Noodle Man Lang", recounted the method of making dough figurines.
As the third generation inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage - the dough sculpture "Noodle Man Lang", Lang Jiaziyu proudly said, "Mr. Bingxin's article is written by his grandfather Lang Shao'an, who once brought the dough man to the diplomatic stage at home and abroad."
At the age of three or four, Lang Jiaziyu often carried a small stool and sat next to his father, staring intently at him kneading the dough for an hour or two. At the age of four or five, he officially began learning to knead dough under the guidance of his father. Although one part of the dough often requires repeated operations to pass, he never finds it boring.
In his adolescence, Lang Jiaziyu had his own thoughts on creation and began to reject traditional themes: "I thought that only creating works with new themes was the right creation. So I paid more attention to the popular elements of various countries, and as long as they were new, they were all used, and as long as they were traditional, they were all ignored."
In this way, Lang Jiaziyu fell into a "lost path of innovation", repeatedly making unrecognizable changes without creating works that satisfied him. Later, he gradually realized that although innovation is the only way to change everything, not all "differences" are benign, and some have changed the original essence, which is more fatal than the complacency of not seeking change. So, he began to return to tradition and devoted himself to studying the precious cultural heritage left by his ancestors, attempting to summarize and extract his own "uniqueness" from it.
At an important moment in the fight against the COVID-19, Lang Jiaziyu saw the medical staff fighting on the front line of the epidemic on the Internet. The faces red and covered with indentations were deeply touched by him. "I immediately decided to express my feelings and respect with works." That night, the face sculpture "Women", which combined the image of the heroine Mu Guiying with the perseverance, fearlessness, delicacy and tenderness of the medical staff, was completed.
"Adding traditional aesthetics to creative ideas is the hardest part," Lang Jiaziyu recalled during the creative process. "Good works require secondary creation, imbuing them with emotional depth and making them more rich and dynamic.".
On the path of inheriting intangible cultural heritage, Lang Jiaziyu combines traditional techniques with the hot topics of the times, creating many unique dough sculpture works, allowing people to see the new gameplay of the old craft of dough sculpture.
On February 5th last year, Lang Jiaziyu, as a representative of the young inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, showcased his dough sculpture works and skills to foreign heads of state participating in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics at the Great Hall of the People.
"I remember that at that time, I worked with Prince Albert II of Monaco to create a dough sculpture of Bing Dwen Dwen. He finished the eyes of Bing Dwen Dwen himself, looked at his work with joy, and asked if I could help him? Because he had a pair of twins at home, it was not easy to bring back only one." After hearing the prince's words, Lang Jiaziyu and the staff on the scene were amused by him.
But what made Lang Jiaziyu even happier was that the dough sculpture craftsmanship once again went abroad, and Chinese intangible cultural heritage culture went global: "When I stood in front of foreign friends as a Chinese craftsman, my mind was filled with the figures of my family sitting on the desk for decades. Chinese intangible cultural heritage on the world stage has never stopped shining."
In order to help more people understand the art of dough sculpture, Lang Jiaziyu posted his works and creative process online. He replicated his grandfather's representative work "The Battle of Lu Bu" and fully displayed the entire work through 3D scanning.
"It's a great surprise that many young people like the dough figurines I make. With everyone's enthusiastic support, I have accumulated over 2 million fans. In fact, they are not only my fans, but also fans of China's excellent traditional culture. I want to use my own hands to make the artwork hit the hearts of the new generation and make the dough sculpture craft shine more brilliantly," said Lang Jiaziyu.
