From June 7 to June 23, 2023, the Chinese giant tree scientific research team composed of the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden - Chenshan Center of the National Important Wild Plant Germplasm Resources Bank, Xiamen University, China Wildlife Conservation Association, Xizang Autonomous Region Plateau Biology Research Institute, Xizang Autonomous Region Forestry and Grassland Bureau, Bomi County Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Linzhi City, "Wild China" studio, 720 cloud platform, etc., went to Yigong Township, Bomi County, Linzhi City and other places, successfully completed the comprehensive scientific research of cypress giant tree community in southern Tibet.
This survey found that the giant tree community in this area has a rich height hierarchy: there are not entirely 260 giant trees above 80 meters, and 25 giant trees at 90 meters. According to the living height calculation, one giant tree at a height of 100 meters is called South Tibetan Cypress I, with a living height of 101.2 meters, followed by South Tibetan Cypress II, with a living height of 99.5 meters. On August 13, 2023, the scientific research team released photos and related data of these two giant trees.

In May 2023, a joint investigation team led by Peking University, using lidar technology, found and measured a 102.3 meter high Xizang cypress in Tongmai, Bomi County, setting a new record for the tallest tree in Asia. In order to investigate the distribution of giant tree communities, the Chinese Giant Tree Research Team visited the 15 hectare primitive forest area of Yigong Township in Bomi in June and completed a background survey of 10000 square meters of the community. Scientists climbed trees to reach the canopy layer, and the system completed scientific research on the canopy layer of two giant trees, collecting plant specimens and germplasm resources of the giant tree community.

The members of the scientific research team introduced that the cypress of Xizang, which had been measured as 102.3 meters before, was identified as the cypress of southern Tibet through the comparison of morphology and literature collected on the site. Its historical height was 102.3 meters, equivalent to 36 floors. The living height is 101.2 meters; According to current measurement records, its living height of 101.2 meters remains the second tallest tree species in the world and the tallest tree in Asia.

This scientific examination is an important component of the second Qinghai Tibet scientific examination on "Forest and Shrubs Ecosystem and Resource Management", and an important part of the collection of wild plant germplasm resources in the National Important Wild Plant Germplasm Resource Bank.

At present, it is known that the cypress in southern Tibet only exists in some areas of the Palong Zangbu and Yigong Zangbu valleys, tributaries of the the Yarlung Zangbo River, and is endemic to China. The scientific research team found that based on the Bomi giant tree community with cypress trees in southern Xizang as the core, combined with the Bhutanese pine giant tree community found in Motuo County, Tibet, the yellow fruit fir giant tree community found in Chayu County, and the giant tree community in Gongshan County, Yunnan, it is a world-class giant tree distribution center extending from southeast Tibet to Hengduan Mountain in northwest Yunnan. This is another major progress made by the Chinese Giant Tree Research Team after completing the scientific research on Taiwania flousiana in Gongshan County of Yunnan Province in 2021 and the comprehensive scientific research on Abies xanthocarpa in Chayu County of Xizang in 2022.
The content of this scientific examination involves interdisciplinary fields such as plant taxonomy, forest ecology and canopy research, germplasm resource collection and management, and soil physicochemical analysis. Subsequent research is also ongoing.
