On July 14th, after more than 60 hours of breaking his right leg, Chinese fisherman Shang welcomed the hope of his life in the South Pacific, thousands of miles away from his motherland. Local time, on the 14th, the Chinese Navy's "Peace Ark" hospital ship temporarily adjusted its route and successfully performed damage control surgery on him.

On the morning of the 11th, this fisherman accidentally fell into the sea while working in the waters east of Kiribati Tarawa, and was cut by the tail oar of the fishing boat from the front of his right calf, causing an open fracture of his tibia and fibula. Due to limited medical conditions on the fishing boat and infection of the wound, his condition continued to worsen and he had to seek help from the Chinese Embassy in Kiribati.
At the same time, the Chinese Navy's "Peace Ark" hospital ship carrying out the "Harmony Mission-2023" mission was sailing on the ocean. According to the plan, Kiribati is the first stop for the hospital ship's mission visit.

After receiving a notification from the embassy, a maritime rescue operation for the lives of compatriots began. After analyzing the situation and requesting instructions, the hospital ship "Peace Ark" decided to immediately adjust its route, turn to high-speed navigation for 28 hours, and meet with the fishing boat at around 2am on the 14th.
At this point, the injured person had been suffering for over 60 hours without painkillers.
At 5 o'clock, the "Peace Ark" hospital ship began remote medical consultations with the Naval Medical University via satellite. Six trauma orthopedic and joint orthopedic experts provided consultation opinions on the final surgical plan for the injured.

At 6:30, the injured person was pushed into the operating room. The first open fracture surgery on board the Peace Ark Hospital was carried out in the South Pacific Ocean.

Under general anesthesia, debridement and suturing, Kirschner wire internal fixation, and plaster external fixation were performed... After nearly 4 hours of intensive treatment, medical staff thoroughly cleared the necrotic and infected tissue around the wound, reduced and fixed the fractured end, controlled the spread of infection, and successfully completed the injury control surgery.
It is understood that when the injured were transported to the "Peace Ark" hospital ship, an open fracture of the right calf had occurred for more than 60 hours, and there was a high possibility of necrosis of the distal limb due to the fracture. If the infection spreads, it will also lead to amputation and even endanger life.

"At present, the risk of amputation has been reduced, and there is great hope for the injured person's right calf to be preserved," said Dr. Lin Wenbo, the chief surgeon.
